E-mail to a friend

Staff report

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office has charged a Salisbury man with operating a ticket house.

Olen Stamper Jr., 47, of 827 Glover Road, was cited on possession of number tickets and operating a game of chance.

This is not Stamper's first arrest for gambling.

In 2003, Stamper and his brother, Bradford, were convicted in federal court for gambling and money laundering after authorities said the men raked in millions off the schemes.

Probably won't be the last. Problem with this is, there are a few of these operations that usually get overlooked. I guess they fool the Sheriff by running a front as a mulch and rock dealer, like the one on Webb Rd. Or maybe a car lot on S. Main at an old ice cream shop. Or maybe a front isn't needed, like the one on 152 going into Rockwell. Maybe they are safe because they contribute to worthy causes, or maybe they are just Lucky. Just seems strange that these are not usually busted, when the others get raided every 6 months or so.
