Black vying for seat on Salisbury City Council

Charles A. Black, an officer with state departments of correction in Virginia and North Carolina for the past 29 years, filed Friday as a candidate for Salisbury City Council.

Black, 60, lives at 112 Celtic Circle.

He said he is running "to help the working class of people."

"Annexation should be voted on by the people," Black said, adding he has attended legislative meetings in Raleigh with involuntary annexation opponents from Rowan County and elsewhere.

Black said his priorities as a councilman would be fairness and "to treat people the way I want to be treated."

His community involvement, Black said, has been in working with neighborhood watch.

He said he previously ran for political office when he was living in Tennessee.

Others recently filing for the Nov. 3 City Council election include Benjamin R. Johnson of 305 Knollwood Ave. and Wes Thompson of 119 Heilig Ave.

They join Blake Jarman, Susan Kluttz, William "Pete" Kennedy, Mark Lewis, Paul Woodson, Maggie Blackwell, and Michael S. Young as candidates so far.

The filing period for municipal elections closes at noon July 17.

All five seats on the City Council are up for election to two-year terms.
