Six Rowan-Salisbury graduates receive F&M scholarships

Six 2008 graduates of Rowan-Salisbury Schools have been named recipients of F&M Bank Merit Awards. Another six scholarships were awarded in Cabarrus County.

The scholarships include college-related expenses of tuition, books and fees, not to exceed $500 for one year at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

The winner from East Rowan High School is Brad Evans, son of Nancy and Chris Evans of Rockwell. He plans to attend RCCC and transfer to the University of North Carolina at Asheville to major in atmospheric science. At East Rowan, he was active in band and a member of the National Honor Society.

Mark Freeze, son of Susan and Gary Freeze of Salisbury, is the winner from Salisbury High School, where he was the CTE Student of the Year in 2007. He plans to study automotive technology.

North Rowan High School’s winner is Courtney Houston Williams, daughter of Brian Williams and Teresa Jackson. She plans to study nursing. A North Rowan honor graduate, she was the yearbook editor, Allied Health Science intern, N.C. Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society.

Sarah Wray Brown of Mount Ulla, daughter of Mia Holshouser and Scottie Brown, is the winner at West Rowan High School. She plans to study nursing. She was a member of West Rowan’s Future Farmers of America and Health Occupation Students of America and participated in Relay for Life.

The winner from South Rowan High School is Kelcey Marie Bennick of China Grove. She plans to study for the medical field. A member of Health Occupation Students of America at South Rowan, she was also a junior volunteer at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast for 3 1/2 years.

Amy Chandler received the award at J.C. Carson High School. Daughter of Bobby and Cynthia Chandler, she plans to study nursing. At Carson, she was a member of student council and Health Occupation Students of America and worked on the yearbook and school newspaper.

Cabarrus County winners include Daniel Center IV from Northwest Cabarrus High School and Kimberly Wetter from A.L. Brown High School.
