Free movie and Stories Under the Stars

Friday, July 10, 2009 3:00 AM  |  Printer friendly version | E-mail to a friend | On Saturday at 7 p.m., Beverly Botsford, a cross-cultural percussionist and story teller, will entertain audiences on the patio at the Cabarrus County Public Library — Kannapolis Branch, 850 Mountain St., Kannapolis.

The Stories Under the Stars is sponsored by the city of Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with Ike's Construction and the Cabarrus library.

Botsford has been studying dance, performing arts and percussion for more than 25 years. She has toured with Chuck Davis and the African American Dance Ensemble, been a member of the American Dance Festival Faculty, and has done work with arts in education in schools and communities.

A lover of jazz, she has shared the stage with, among others, Sir Roland Hanna, Bud Shank and Tito Puente. Since 1998, she has toured with five-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, performing in major jazz festivals, clubs and theaters around the world.

The city of Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department and Ike's Construction, are sponsoring the next free outdoor movie tonight at 8:45 p.m. "Jumanji" will be shown on the 40-foot by 20-foot Time Warner Big Screen at the Village Park Amphitheater, between West A and C streets off of Dale Earnhardt Boulevard.

A magical board game serves as a door to another dimension in this adventure fantasy. When a pair of orphans discover the game, they unwittingly unleash a man who's been trapped inside, as well as an array of stampeding jungle animals, brought vividly to the big screen.

The evening is also sponsored by Radio Disney, Cabarrus Arts Council and Carolina NewsChannel 36.

Parking for outdoor movies will be available at the Village Park parking lot. Blankets, lawn chairs and picnics are permitted. Please, no pets, alcohol, grilling or glass bottles.
