South Rowan FFA Chapter wins awards at state convention

The South Rowan FFA Chapter won several awards at the 81st N.C. FFA State Convention June 23-25. Students competed in Career Development Events, attended sessions conducted by the state FFA officers and were recognized for their FFA achievements.
The Food Science team of Jessica Hilton, Meghan Massey, Dana Morrison and Avery Patterson, placed first in the state. This team will compete at the National FFA Convention in October.
Eric Corriher received the state FFA degree. John Hoffner was recognized as an American Degree candidate and will receive this award at the National FFA Convention.
South Rowan FFA had three teams competing at the convention. Corriher, Justin Hoce and Matt Honeycutt competed in the forestry contest. Preston Barringer, Nathan Hartsell and Dylan Hogue participated in the agricultural mechanics contest.
All students enrolled in an agriculture class are required to complete an agriculture project outside of class time. FFA Proficiency Awards recognize students for the success of their agricultural projects. Corriher was recognized as the first place Proficiency Award winner in the area of Wildlife Production and Management.
Carrie Hoffner also received first-place honors in home and/or community development. Rebekah Moore placed second in the state in sheep production as well as diversified livestock production.
Hoffner received the State Star in Placement Award, given to an FFA member who has excelled in an area of agricultural placement.
During the State FFA Convention, students and supporters of the FFA are recognized. This year, South Rowan FFA alumni members Henry and Jo Starnes received the Honorary State FFA Degree. The Starneses have been longtime supporters of the South Rowan FFA Chapter.
At the close of the convention, Carrie Hoffner was elected state FFA president for 2009-2010.
South Rowan FFA advisers are David Overcash and Laura Hoffner.
