Six hoping for seat on ABC board

jburchette@salisburypost.comA former ABC general manager is asking county commissioners to appoint her to the ABC board to put the system "back on track and restore its good name."

Linda Lowman, who served as bookkeeper and general manager during 30 years with the Rowan County ABC system, is one of six applicants seeking to fill one seat on the Rowan-Kannapolis ABC Board.

Gus Andrews, a former county commissioner and current member, is also seeking reappointment to a three-year term.

In a letter accompanying her application, Lowman cited the system's track record of producing profits during her tenure. "I believe the current system works, but it's who is running it that makes the difference."

She noted there have been only four general managers since 1949. They were: J. Allen Dunn, David Graham Jr., Lowman and Terry Osborne, current manager.

"Until now everything and everyone has been above board," Lowman wrote. "I already have many ideas to save money and make a profit for the county."

She also requested in her letter that commissioners designate her as chairman of the ABC board in order to be more effective.

"I believe the citizens of Rowan County expect their commissioners to make changes in the ABC," Lowman said.

Under state ABC laws, county commissioners designate which of the three ABC members serve as chairman.

Last month, commissioners defeated a motion on a split vote to replace all three current members of the ABC board.

Andrews noted he has worked to implement changes and make the system more profitable.

"I feel my influence and persistence has been instrumental in these adjustments, which have enabled the system to move in a profitable direction."

Other applicants include:

- Michael Lee Turman, Gregory Road, real estate owner manager, past owner and general manager of Honda Kawasaki Polaris. He cited his business experience.

- Larry Wright, Heritage Lane, retired electrical engineer, cited his commitment to be honest, trustworthy, and increase the profits for the county and municipalities.

- Rodney G. Cress, N.C. 152 East, retired law enforcement officer, current veterans' advocate who cites the need for the ABC system to be accountable.

- Melissa W. Ratliff, Jones Road, dental assistant, president of West Rowan Middle PTA. She cited concerns about the need for control of alcohol and drugs in the schools.
