If the victim with said wireless connection for some reason had shared her harddrive, that is the easiest way in. Numerous other exploits exist once you get someone's IP address, as you likely know. More than likely, she had nothing disturbed and just felt threatened by them. But given that she likely did not secure the wireless router, then there is any number of things people in range could do her PC once they knew which internal IP she had on the network and they were connected to her using another internal IP within the range of the router. Plus they had the means to change her settings if she did not change the default password and they ran down the default passwords for Linksys, Belkin, etc. I would rather not list the array of ways she could have been victimized, but failing to secure her wireless device was her first mistake. This is like giving anyone the keys to browse your data. :( If you haven't done so yet, folks, please change your default router password and go to a secure method of wireless signal transmission. There are a lot of honest people out there, but there are also a lot of children/adults out there who are curious, and a few that are malicious. They might only "borrow" your speed for a bit by sharing your Internet, but take it from me, there is far more they can do if you leave yourself wide open to the world.

You state, "I dont see how they would hack into the host computers' hard drive through a router."--- And then you say,-- "connecting to a router by means of an ethernet cable or through a wireless or Wi-Fi antenna wont usually compromise the host computer."-- Maybe that's why PIGGYBACKING is illegal? If it's not set for the public, people should ask.

Im not sure of the procedure used to link to the womans router. If it was a wireless router, anyone with a laptop or wireless antenna on thier desktop can recieve a signal and "link" up to the internet for free. This doesnt harm the host computer or cause the internet connection to slow down. If the individual connected a ethernet cable to a router that had extra connections or plug in's, then they could also get access to the internet this way. I dont see how they would hack into the host computers' hard drive through a router. I believe that the woman who reported this incident may have not known that connecting to a router by means of an ethernet cable or through a wireless or Wi-Fi antenna wont usually compromise the host computer. I can take my laptop around town and connect to the internet at many businesses and homes that have a wireless router..for free.
