Warrant: Boyd murder suspect led police to another suspect
E-mail to a friendspotts@salisburypost.com One of the suspects in the murder of local dentist Dr. David Boyd told authorities that another suspect was planning to flee to Tennessee to avoid being arrested and had vowed to "avoid capture at all costs," a search warrant said. The statement was included in an affidavit attached to a search warrant for the Concord mobile home where authorities took Christopher Allen Boyd into custody Sunday. Police say it came from suspect Jonathan Alexander Barnett. Boyd, 21, of 873 Oakwood Villa Drive in Kannapolis, and Barnett, 18, of 6276 Old Salisbury Road, Kannapolis, and Candice Jo Drye, 23, of 142 Delano's Lane, Mocksville, are charged with murdering Dr. Boyd last Thursday. Drye was arrested the day of the murder, and Barnett's mother brought him to authorities Saturday. Barnett told police, the search warrant says, that before turning himself in, he took Christopher Boyd to 2768 Golfball Circle, Concord "so that Boyd could hide prior to leaving for the State of Tennessee." The search warrant says that Barnett told police Christopher Boyd was fleeing "in fear of being captured for the murder of Dr. J. David Boyd." "Boyd's intentions were to avoid capture at all costs, and made specific threat of death and/or severe bodily harm to any law enforcement officers who attempted to apprehend him," authorities said in the search warrant. Investigators got the search warrant earlier in order to find Christopher Boyd at the Golfball Circle home of Jimmy Dean Outen in the Southern Hills mobile home park. Among 11 items seized during the search were a straight-razor blade, cocaine, a piece of cut plastic straw, a Marlboro cigarette package containing cocaine wrapped in cellophane, a rolled $20 bill with white powder on it, a plastic baggie containing marijuana and rolling papers. The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office executed the warrant. Salisbury investigators executed search warrants Thursday, at the 9 Pine Tree Road home where an employee discovered Boyd's body, and Friday at his Statesville Boulevard office. At Boyd's office, authorities seized unused condoms, a vibrator, alcohol and other items. They based probable cause for the warrant on Drye's statements in interviews that she and others had traded sexual favors for prescription drugs from Dr. Boyd. During an interview with Jonathan Barnett, Barnett directed Salisbury Detective Travis Shulenberger to the Golfball Circle address, the Cabarrus warrant says. The warrant does not detail Outen's relationship to Christopher Boyd, who is not related to Dr. Boyd. There were three men at the home when officers arrived. One was Outen and the other Christopher Boyd. The third person is not identified in the warrant. Outen has not been charged. What do you think? Post your comment below. Comments

I've been thinking responds : Monday, July 07, 2008 12:17 PM Re: To "I've been thinking": Friday, July 04, 2008 6:10 AM My stupidity comes and goes I guess. With drugs illegal I notice how that keeps the “dopeheads” miraculously off the streets now. Re: "I've been thinking too"...that you're an IDIOT! : Friday, July 04, 2008 6:17 PM I am not sure about the stupid pills you talk off, but thanks for your concern. I’ll check my food more carefully and make sure someone is not sneaking them in. First off, thoroughly read my comment before posting about it calling me an idiot. I not once said legalize DUI’s (My exact comment: “And of course, strict penalties for public intoxication and driving while intoxicated.”) I am glad you can diagnose me as an idiot while showing your inability to accurately comment on my posting. Re: response to those favoring legalization of drugs and prostitution: Saturday, July 05, 2008 11:50 AM I agree that a lot of society’s problems are because people lack moral principles. I am sorry that I am not on any illegal drugs myself. I do take medicine for stomach problems, but the side affects don’t list impaired judgment, idiocies, or stupidity as side affects and unfortunately for me I am not independently wealthy (wish I was). I don’t know if the legalization of these activities could be supported financially. We already have the Drug Enforcement Agency which is already supported with tax payer dollars. Of course there is no federal prostitution regulatory agency and that would cost money or we could turn the ATF into the Alcohol Tobacco Firearm and Prostitution (ATFP). Ha ha! I agree that legalization of these activities would lead to more sex and drug addicts, which in turn would as you said, “…increase the crime rate for thefts and murders in that addicts would need to rob, steal, and kill to obtain more money to support their ever-increasing habits.” Your argument alone is reason enough to not legalize prostitution or drug use. Thank you for your educated opinion towards my comments with the least amount of personal criticism. This was the type of discussion I was looking for. Re: Legalize drugs and prostitution?: Friday, July 04, 2008 5:37 AM If you need a break ask your boss for one. Who should have intervened long ago so we can all point our fingers at them? On your opinion on, “Some sins are worse than others”, we will have to agree to disagree. To all: My posting was “Just a thought!” I don’t believe that we should legalize prostitution and drug use (It was just a thought!). I was trying to invoke intelligent debate not unintelligent criticism. For those that choose to criticize my thoughts so harshly while not answering any of the questions I asked or offering an intelligent discussion showed who the real idiot and stupid persons are. If you had the ability to fully read and comprehend on at least a sixth grade level you would have realized that my posting was “just a thought.” Nothing more and nothing less. Shame on you!

response to those favoring legalization of drugs and prostitution : Saturday, July 05, 2008 2:50 PMLegalize drugs and prostitution? That's one of the problems with society today in that their are people with no morals. You must be on drugs yourself, and you also must be independently wealthly to make a comment like that. How do you suppose the legalization of these activities would be supported financially? I guess you don't mind paying even more taxes to support "Big Government" programs. Legalization would also lead to the development of more sex and drug addicts given that there would be an unlimited supply of both. It would also increase the crime rate for thefts and murders in that addicts would need to rob, steal, and kill to obtain more money to support their ever-increasing habits. Society needs a return to morals and family values. My sympathy and prayers to the family members left behind to deal with this tragedy.

Must be an adverse effect of all those stupid pills you've been getting after hours from your "brain" surgeon! Perhaps we can draw up a petition to have DUI's, illegal drug use, and prostitution legalized right here in Rowan County. And then we can just sit back and watch what happens! That's what you get when idiots start "thinking".

Report AbuseWhat is the World Coming too?? : Friday, July 04, 2008 3:42 PM I watch the news and read the papers on what is going on around us. Why in God's name didnt the law do their job and maybe he would still be alive. And the arrest of such young people would have not happen. Listen people, wake up, Dr.Boyd was trading pills for sex and yes they were hooked on something that was givig to them by a licensed Doctor. Why didnt his staff step up and do their part, unless they were invovled also. I feel very bad for his wife and children. no one deserves to die like that. but what can you expect when you get a bunch of kids looked on drugs for your on self sexual needs. This story has got to be more to it then a robbery gone bad or a girl hooked on pain killers that the Dentist gave her to get sex. How many more are out there that he did the same to. please tell us. They are the ones that needed the counseling and the rehabs. The Dentist started this and he got death and if you look at it so did the others. Once again my prayers go out for the wife and children.

To "I've been thinking" : Friday, July 04, 2008 9:10 AMAre you completely stupid or does it come and go on certain days? Alcohol is legal and look at how easy it is to keep people from drinking and driving; yeah, right. So let's legalize drugs, maybe the dopeheads can take out some of the drunks on the road for us. Maybe we'll get caught in the crossfire. Don't take your stupid pill tomorrow.
Report AbuseLegalize drugs and prostitution? : Friday, July 04, 2008 8:37 AM Gimme a break. Somebody dies and you thing society should have been more permissive. Drugs and prostitution are already so prolific they might as well be legal. These people were/are amoral with weak characters. Someone should have intervened long ago. That would have been the only hope. Don't try to lower the bar. It's low enough already. Some sins are worse than others.
Report AbuseResponse to Curious : Thursday, July 03, 2008 11:12 PM OK, how do you suppose the police would go about investigating this case in a fair manner, while maintaining rights of the accused, and developing enough evidence to support a conviction over all of the opposition they would face in court, and do it without conducting proper background investigations of all involved and do it in less than a month? I am sure the police will be taking notes from your expertise!! Another thing, if you were aware of this occuring for the past 3 years, what information have you provided to help this thing (unfold), the police acknowledge they were investigating the Dr. a mere few weeks prior to his death, and you had information for years?????
Report AbuseMakes me wonder... : Thursday, July 03, 2008 11:08 PM The doctor was a pervert and now im starting to wonder what kind of people i have working on me at these medical offices. i feel sorry for the wife and kids, no dr. boyd sorry.
Report Abusepeople in the office. : Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:02 PM So the doc was trading pills for sex, so that made in a drug dealer. I had a feeling when I read the paper and seen where Doc called her family and they call her boyfriend, that he had something to do with it. what I am wondering is why didn't the people in the office say or do something when these women are coming to the office for so long for the pills. Lets throw some of the blame to them for not speaking up, if you know something is going on that is illegal, you are to tell the police or you are just as bad as the doctor.
Report Abusecurious : Thursday, July 03, 2008 8:41 PM Now I am the one curious. You are quick to point a finger at the police for not moving quicker on the drug investigation, yet you say you know 2 others that were doing the same for the past 2 years. Why didn't you become a responsible person and turn him in or at least let the police know what you knew? Or are you one of those 2 "others". Look what you may have been able to prevent!

Report Abusecurious : Thursday, July 03, 2008 4:46 PM I REALLY FEEL THAT IF THE POLICE HAD STAYED ON TOP OF THINGS AND WOULDN'T HAVE WAITED AS LONG AS THEY DID WITH THE WHOLE TRADING PILLS FOR SEX FAVORS WHICH APPEARS POLICE WERE ALREADY INVOLVED LONG BEFORE HIS DEATH DR. BOYD WOULDN'T BE DEAD NOW. THE POLICE SHOULD HAVE ALREADY UNFOLDED THIS LONG AGO. CONSIDERING I KNOW ATLEAST TWO PEOPLE THAT WERE DOING THE SAME THING WITH DR. BOYD AND THAT'S BEEN ATLEAST THREE YEARS AGO. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY AND MY HEART REALLY GOES OUT TO HIS KIDS. I PRAY WHEN THEY GO BACK TO SCHOOL THEY ARE NOT RIDICULED!!WHICH I HAVE A BAD FEELING WITH HOW CRUEL KIDS ARE THESE DAYS THAT IT PROBABLY WILL HAPPEN.WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES THE ONLY ONE WHO IS PERFECT IS GOD.SO IT IS A SHAME HE WAS KILLED. IT WAS UNNECESSARY BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE NEVER TOLD THEY CAME IN AND STOLE STUFF BECAUSE THEY HAD SOMETHING REALLY BIG ON HIM!!POLICE REALLY NEED TO GET ON THE BALL WITH THINGS THAT COME TO THEIR ATTENTION INSTEAD OF TAKING THINGS SO LIGHTLY AND THIS MAN WOULD STILL BE ALIVE.

THEY NEED TO ADD BEING A HOOKER TO THE MURDER CHARGE.
Report AbuseThanks Salisbury post ! : Thursday, July 03, 2008 3:58 PM I don't think the Post should be shameful of what they are doing. It is a part of their job that's what their profession is all about making news. They are using it RIGHT! Well it's hard to face the truth sometimes but need to learn to accept whatever happens now(both parties are the victim) and the incident will not happened if there's no beginning. How they know each other? How it started? One thing I can say whatever we doing, where ever we are... always put God first in our hearts and mind to avoid any sins. Let's do good things! And not to think of anything in return.
Report AbuseI've been thinking: : Thursday, July 03, 2008 3:56 PM The more I read about this story the more I wonder if we should just legalize prostitution and drug use. For the record I morally disagree with both, but this is what I have been pondering over the past few days: If prostitution and drug use were legal would this tragic event still of happened? The dentist would have had a place to go to satisfy his desires and the girl could have gotten the drugs that she desired. These two people would likely never meet because they wouldn't have needed each other. By legalizing prostitution and drug use we could increase government revenue through high taxes on both. Then we would need very strict penalties for offenders that wouldn’t abide by the new regulations. And of course, strict penalties for public intoxication and driving while intoxicated. Another benefit would be that we could cut organized crimes and terrorisms large source of revenue overnight by removing their supply and demand advantage. I know that this will not reduce crime completely and would open up a new set of problems. It’s just a thought! One more thing: Just because we are not addicted to drugs or sex doesn’t mean that we all don’t have our own vices that we struggle with daily. I know I am not perfect and have no right to judge any of these people. I was taught that a sin is a sin which means I am as guilty as everyone else that sins. Just my two cents for what its worth.

Response to "AMUSING"... : Thursday, July 03, 2008 3:19 PMThere is nothing "AMUSING" or "entertaining" about any of this. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, no matter what the topic is. I do realize that not everybody that leaves comments on this site, has as much tact as the other, but as for myself, am not here to exploit or degrade anyone in this situation. It genuinely hurts me to see anyone suffer from a direct or indirect result of the disease of addiction. My heart goes out to Mrs. Boyd, their 3 innocent children & the children of Candice Jo Drye....they all have been brought into this & are suffering, by no choice of their own. They are all in my thoughts & prayers daily.---- So, to the person who thinks that the people in Salisbury "have nothing better to do" than make comments about this horrific story, at least I take ownership in my opinion by posting my name & where I live...unlike many others.

Report AbuseDr. Boyd death : Thursday, July 03, 2008 12:41 PM I feel like he is as guilty as the ones who killed him. I have been addicted to pain pills for 14 years, not from him but you wouldn't believe the condition you get in when you run out. Also he used the pills for sex. The only ones I feel sorry for are the families left behind. My prayers go out to the children most of all, because my husband was murdered and I had 3children, ages 3 to 8 years old. The oldest one never recovered from it completely. So I ask God to watch over the children in both families. It's been 14 years and my oldest son and myself still haven't accepted it. GOD BLESS ALL INVOLVED.

2 Sides 2 Every Story : Thursday, July 03, 2008 12:10 PMI have been keeping up with this story since it came out last week. I agree with another poster, that the Boyd family are the real victims in this situation. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. At the same time, I feel sorry for the three young children that Candice Jo Drye has left behind. I am a grateful recovering addict myself & have been completely clean for over one year, so I know how painful it can be for the family of those in active addiction. Those children did not ask to be brought into this world, & they sure didn't ask to have an addict as a mother...my thoughts & prayers go out to them as well. Even though Candice & the other suspects involved have an obvious addiction to drugs, doesn't justify their actions. & just because Dr. Boyd provided the prescriptions in return for sexual favors, doesn't mean that he needed to die. It's a shame to me that they all couldn't get help first, before something so tragic had to happen. There is always two sides to every story & we have all been well informed by the Salisbury Post of one side....being Candice Jo Drye & her family's story, but we will never know Dr. Boyd's side of the story b/c he is not hear to defend himself!! Dr. Boyd obviously had some deep underlying problems of his own & in no way do I agree with what he did, but now he does not have the opportunity to explain this to his wife or his three children, nor will he be given a second chance to make things right in his life. I just think we should all remember & take into consideration that there is ALWAYS two sides to every story.
Report AbuseTrailer Trash? : Thursday, July 03, 2008 11:35 AM Since when does living in a mobile home park automatically label you as trash? Report Abusetrailer trash : Thursday, July 03, 2008 11:02 AM Because the rich man is no better than anyone else. It takes one to no one. The man you say is sooooo smart ended up being trash himself. Just because a person has money it does not make the person better than someone else. You can have all the money in the world, live in a big house, drive a fancy car and still be a low life. Some of the poorest people (trailer trash) have better morals than the richest. It all depends on the person. Rich or Poor
Report AbuseWho's the real trash? : Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:48 AM The Salisbury Post is extremely biased and keeps on reporting information that has already been covered. If anyone is keeping rumors going in this town it is the Post. And to "great job by the post": the people that are accused of murdering Dr. Boyd are not the only trash involved in this story. The Dr. may have had money but that doesn't make him any better, apparently, than the people he became involved with. Money doesn't make anyone better, morals do. Remember that.
Report Abuse: Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:39 AM The MRS should not say anything....how ignorant are you? She is probably in deep mourning and deserves total privacy and respect. . The Dr. Boyd she knew as her husband and the father to her 3 children is obviously not the same one being represented in the papers, he had two sides and I am sure this evil side was not evident to his wife and children. This is no reflection on her whatsoever and he is responsible and paid with his life for his own actions.
Report AbuseWHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH YOU LOOSING YOUR JOB? : Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:37 AM I am not really sure why you would want the post to air your getting laid off today? I was reading these comments and then all of a sudden a piece about someone getting laid off? If you have a problem with your boss doing this to you, you do know you have rights. If you were laid off due to no work, etc. then go and file for unemployement. You said he laid you off, laid off means generally for a temporary amount of time. There had to be a reason for him to lay you off because he knows when you file for unemployement he will have to tell them why you were laid off so they can determine whether or not you are eligible for unemployement. It is also not the richs fault. I don't know why people keep on saying "The Rich". I am NOT RICH BY NO MEANS", but I am rich in other ways. I have a wonderful husband, son, job, and I have worked hard to make something for myself. To me that is as rich as you can be (in Gods eyes). Truly though, don't let the boss do this to you, he can lay you off, but he can not fire you without a good reason, so check into your rights. Maybe look into drawing unemployement and maybe check into going back to school.

As far as this being in the paper, bits and pieces of the Cabarrus warrant were in the paper, yes, but not the whole thing. Too Close to Home : Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:24 AMDr. Boyd was our family dentist since our family moved here 8 years ago. I am surprised and appalled to hear how he manipulated young women. These women have serious issues if they were trading sex for drugs. Boyd must have noticed their vulnerability and took advantage of it at any cost; however I am almost certain the thought of being murdered never crossed his mind while he wrote those prescriptions. Its an awful situation for the family he left behind; but I am almost certain his family will not suffer financially, as they would had he been caught and incarcerated. My condolences to the family he left behind and to his committed staff. I guess we have to look for a new dentist now.
