Second swine flu case confirmed in Rowan

A second case of the novel H1N1 flu, more commonly known as the swine flu, has been reported in Rowan County.

Nora Cartner, adult public health supervisor for the Rowan County Health Department, said a Rowan adolescent attending a camp in Georgia tested positive for the flu. The case was reported to the Health Department by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday.

Cartner said she did not know the adolescent's age or sex. Though the department continues to get calls from concerned citizens and practitioners asking if they or their patients should be tested, she said none have met the criteria for required testing.

Only people in summer camps, day-care centers, long-term care facilities or hospitals are being tested, Cartner said, because of the potential for spread. Others with symptoms of the flu are being encouraged to take the same precautions they would take with the regular seasonal flu.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
