Del Robideaux, a 52-year-old Fayetteville woman, offered this explanation Saturday about why she has started riding Harley-Davidsons:
"Mid-life crisis," Robideaux said with a chuckle.
"One of those bucket-list type things you do."
Robideaux and about two dozen other Harley riders from Fayetteville were among the thousands who descended on Salisbury last week for the annual N.C. State HOG Rally.
The event for the Harley Owners Group attracted nearly 2,000 members and another 3,000 or so enthusiasts, a worker at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Salisbury said.
The event wrapped up Saturday evening with a parade that began in Spencer and made its way to the Tilley store just east of Interstate 85. A celebration followed at the store.
Many riders said their favorite part of the three-day event was going to Lowe's Motor Speedway.
When participants hopped on their bikes at Tilley Saturday morning, they formed a 10-mile-long chain down the interstate toward Concord, said Lauren Leazer, who works at the Harley store.
Sixty drivers at a time rode their bikes on the speedway.
For Bob Merz of Wilmington, the chance to ride at the speedway was a dream come true.
"We've enjoyed this a lot," Merz said, referring to his girlfriend, Sally Jo Glendenning.
Glendenning said she especially enjoyed the poker runs, where riders go from one stop to the next until they collect five playing cards. At the end, the cards make up a poker hand.
During the runs, riders stopped at local wineries and other spots.
"For me, that's what I liked best," Glendenning said.
Riders from at least 25 states and two Canadian provinces came to Salisbury, said Gary Moss, rally coordinator.
The Tilley store featured about 80 vendors and entertainment Saturday night.
"It has been awesome," Moss said.
Rhonda Norris of Wilmington, who got to the rally Friday afternoon with her husband Greg, said she appreciated how friendly everyone was to her.
Norris said rally volunteers were eager to help people, and everyone was well taken of.
"This was very organized," Norris said.
She and Greg didn't venture to last year's rally in the Outer Banks. But on Friday, they hopped on their bike — "I'm a professional backwarmer," Rhonda Norris said — and rode to Salisbury.
They're glad they made the trip. Norris loved riding on the speedway.
"Oh my God, that was so much fun," she said. "I was just squealing when we took off."

Those motorcycle rallies always bring out the ultimate filth in society to gather together. Nasty smokers, dippers, and almost all who feel that bathing is a foreign concept that's not for them.

Proud Harley Owner
To Honda For Life : Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:54 PM
Honda For Life, we have owned 10 Harley Davidson’s over the years. We have never had to put our Harleys in the shop beyond normal maintenance. One of the Harleys we owned had 85,000 miles on it. We NEVER had ANY mechanical trouble out of it. We sold it for $15,800 to buy a new bike. Would you like to comment on how much your “Honda for Life” or your Yamahas that you talk so highly of are worth? Hmm, didn’t think so given the huge depreciation of those Japanese bikes. Therefore Harley owners invest more money in the beginning by purchasing a QUALITY machine but do not have to continuously fork out the money for repairs and also still receive the value back when the time comes to upgrade or change bikes. So in closing, the “rich people” that you referred to earlier are not ignorant but very intelligent for shopping wisely. In the future, you may want to research and know your facts before posting such a response.

The only reason you ride a Yamaha or Honda is because you can't afford a Harley. Did you ever think that Harley owners feel the same way about you? Get a life...just enjoy the ride no matter what you're on.

Re: Good Riddance : Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:13 PM
I'd rather ride on a Harley and support an American built bike than make some Japanese company richer by buying one of thier bikes. Most Harley owners are a part of a brotherhood that will stand up for each other and the American way. I would rather have a Harley-Davidson under me than a rice burning import anyday.

Good riddance!! : Sunday, June 29, 2008 3:54 PM
Very, very glad they're gone. The God-awful stench of those Harleys was unbearable. Why ANYONE would pick one of those POS's over a Honda or a Yamaha is beyond me. I guess they like pulling things around on trailers and visiting repair shops regularly. Huge waste of money, but i say the richer you are, the more ignorant you are. Just follow your rich lemming friends. Harley makes NO sense.
