Major Tim Bost set to retire after 30 years in law enforcement

Tim Bost's retirement party is set for Tuesday.

If the county commissioners approve — as expected — a change in the county's retiree health insurance on Monday, Bost will end more than 30 years with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

The Kannapolis native virtually grew up in the North Kannapolis Police Department (a subset of the sheriff's department), where his father, Junious "June" Bost was police chief. June Bost retired as chief deputy after 36 years with the Rowan County Sheriff's Department. He died in 2004.

Tim Bost, 53, has served almost as long, including director of the detention center, chief deputy under Sheriff Bob Martin and as a major for Sheriff George Wilhelm.

In March, Bost raised the issue of allowing employees who meet retirement guidelines of the Local Government Employees Retirement System to retire at any age. Currently the county requires employees to be 55 to get free health insurance that continues until age 65.

County commissioners have indicated they will approve the change.

If the change is approved, Tim Bost's retirement reception will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Jury Assembly Room adjacent to the Superior Court Room on the second floor of the Rowan County Justice Center. The party is open to the public.

If the age requirement isn't dropped, Bost has advised the county he will continue working until he reaches 55 — another two years.
