Staff report

SPENCER — A Wisconsin man has been charged with robbing the Spencer branch of SunTrust Bank after he was arrested following a West Virginia bank robbery two weeks later.

Spencer investigators were led to Jordan Michael Scott Karter, 24, of Eagle River, Wis.

According to Spencer Police Chief Robert Bennett, the investigation showed that Karter rented a U-Haul truck in Salisbury on June 12, the day of the SunTrust robbery. The truck was dropped off the next day in Bridgeport, W.Va.

Spencer Police Sgt. Eric Ennis contacted the FBI and authorities in West Virginia to assist in locating Karter.

On June 18, Karter was arrested in White Hall, W.Va., and charged with robbing the Huntington National Bank.

Authorities there told the Times West Virginian newspaper that Karter robbed the bank and then drove about two blocks to a motel, where he was quickly captured.

Police found the Chevrolet pickup Karter was driving shortly after his arrest.

Along with Karter in the motel, police found an older man who apparently knew of the robberies. There was no indication that man participated.

As in the Spencer robbery, West Virginia police say Karter gave the bank teller a note and placed the money in a Crown Royal whiskey bag.

What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
