Cabarrus Red Cross seeks volunteers for summer camp

KANNAPOLIS — What summer camp includes W.H.A.L.E.S. Tales, a tour of an EMS truck, making tornados in a bottle, the Canine Patrol, bike safety and more?

Camp Ready Kids does. Not only are the days packed full of activities the camp is packed full of campers. This year's Ready Kids camps will welcome 240 campers who will have fun while learning safety, preparedness, and personal responsibility.

The American Red Cross, Concord, Kannapolis and Harrisburg fire departments, Emergency Management, EMS and Project Safe Families are hosting the two-day camp for rising first- through fifth-graders.

"Last year's Crossfire Camp was so popular, we expanded the number of camps, increased the number who could attend and expanded the agencies supporting the camp," said Nancy Litton, executive director of the American Red Cross chapter in Cabarrus County.

This year's Camp Ready Kids is being held in two locations — Concord and Kannapolis. Interest from the community has resulted in a waiting list of over 200 and organizers are looking for additional volunteers and resources to hold additional camp dates this summer.

Camp Ready Kids is a free disaster- and safety-preparedness program provided through community donations and the support of volunteers and partner agencies. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with additional camps should call the Red Cross office at 704-782-9022 ext 427.
