Challenger for N.C. Senate District 34 seat says Andrew Brock has forgotten Rowan
E-mail to a friendshuffman @salisburypost.com Bill Burnette said he has a number of problems with Andrew Brock, his opponent in the race for the N.C. Senate District 34 seat. Not the least of those reservations, Burnette said, is that Brock hasn't served well Davie and Rowan counties, the two counties that sent him to the Senate. "My opponent doesn't represent Davie County well and he's forgotten Rowan County," Burnette said. "I promise that won't happen." Burnette, 67, a Davie County businessman and Democrat, is challenging Brock for the Senate seat in November's election. He spoke to members of the Rowan County Senior Democrats Tuesday at the group's monthly meeting at the Tower of Power United Holy Church on East Cemetery Street. About 30 people were on hand. Burnette was introduced by Larry Brown, the Democrat who challenged Brock for the Senate two years ago. Brown noted that Brock's representation has never been highly regarded by those who rate legislators. Earlier this year, Brock was ranked dead last in effectiveness by the N.C. Center for Public Policy Research. "He's been voted time and again the most ineffective member of the N.C. Senate," Brown said. He also noted that Brock, 33, still the Senate's youngest member, has done little in life other than work as a politician. Brock is seeking his fourth consecutive Senate term. "That's been his job," Brown said. "All he's ever done is politics." Burnette told the Senior Democrats that he attended his first convention of the North Carolina Democrats in 1962 and said he's maintained an interest in politics ever since. He's worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Co. before forming Worldwide Tobacco Co. in 1986. He's also one of the owners of Lake Louise Golf Course in Mocksville. "I'm a business person, not a politician," Burnette told those at Tuesday's gathering. He said he raised tobacco back during the glory days of the golden leaf, noting, "I know what it's like to put your crop in and not even get your seed (money) back." Burnette said working to get universal health care for all Americans is one of the main reasons he's running for the Senate. He said his mother is 95 years old and it costs $10,000 a month to provide her the around-the-clock nursing care she needs. Burnette said that with that kind of expense, it doesn't take long to wipe out a person's life savings, regardless of how much they've invested. "It's a shame that we can spend $550 billion in Iraq and we can't take care of the health of our citizens," Burnette said. Asked exactly how he'd go about providing universal health care, Burnette admitted he didn't have all the answers. "I can't tell you I'm a magician," he said. "All I can tell you is, I will work." Burnette also said he was tired of the eastern part of North Carolina getting the share of money for road improvements that was intended for Rowan County and other western counties. "I want to be a part of righting things that are wrong," Burnette said. Comments (22)What do you think? Post your comment below.

Yes we need a nice guy who is a dud. That is how we get our bridge replaced. The worst thing to happen to our chances of getting a state-funded bridge was Brock sponsoring and pushing for the bill.
Report AbuseBrock : Tuesday, August 12, 2008 4:38 PM I don't know him but he seems to be good at HALF of a politician's job, which is to schmooze and get elected. But at the other half of his job, doing substantive legislative work, he appears to be not only bad, but by some accounts the worst in the state. What was he doing running for state GOP chairman the other year when he couldn't get a bill passed to save his life??
Report AbuseBrock is a great Senator! : Tuesday, August 12, 2008 3:45 PM Irregardless of effectiveness, his principles are top notch and what is needed. The General Assembly is out of control. Re-elect Senator Brock. I consider him a personal friend.
Report AbuseRE: Brock=Spoiled, rich boy : Tuesday, August 12, 2008 12:59 PM That's funny. Ever been out to the Brock farm? Spoiled rich boy is the last thing I'd call Brock. Went to WCU on scholarships, worked his way through school and actually WORKED to make something of himself — something I can't say about many of my peers, of which I count Brock among. As for Burnette, he isn't talking about state healthcare. "It's a shame that we can spend $550 billion in Iraq and we can't take care of the health of our citizens." That is a direct quote from Burnette, which is a national issue, not a state issue. Universal healthcare in NC. That'll be the day. LOL. Almost as funny as calling Brock a spoiled rich boy. PS — I wonder how many lung cancer patients Burnette was worrying about while he was working for tobacco companies???

Report Abuse: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 11:34 AM Property taxes - I think he lives on property owned and paid for by his family and while he is a very nice person to talk with, what has he accomplished in Raleigh for Rowan County. Talking is one thing, effectiveness is another.

Brock represetnsus well : Tuesday, August 12, 2008 9:44 AMI have talked with Brock on numerous occassions and also met him in Raleigh. He has always been very helpful and supportive of Rowan county. He has not been bought and paid for like Basnight and Rand have. He will win again in November.
Report AbuseBROCK PAYS NO REAL ESTATE TAXES IN DAVIE COUNTY : Tuesday, August 12, 2008 8:51 AM SENATOR BROCK (DAVIE/ROWAN) IN 2007 PAID ABSOLUTELY NO REAL ESTATE TAXES IN DAVIE COUNTY AND PAID ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE THAT $100 IN PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES IN 2007 (PICKUP TRUCK). BROCK RAILS AGAINST TAXES. GUESS HE HAS LEARNED HOW TO PAY "NO" TAXES.
Report AbuseAndrew Brock : Monday, August 11, 2008 6:54 AM Mr. Brock has always responded to any concerns that I have had. He has conservative values and does not bow to the democrats that have controlled the senate for years and years. I met him at a large function and he listens and ask questions. He is very professional and down to earth. He shut out everything going on around him and treats you like you are the most important person in the world. I voted for him and will continue to do so.

Experience and the vitality of youth counts : Sunday, August 10, 2008 1:13 PMIsn't it just a little suspect that almost two months after the above article appeared in the Post, the Post editors have moved it to the forefront of discussion on their Website? There's no doubt that most of the liberal Post editors and reporting staff are Democrats with an agenda during this election year. If they wern't they would let Bill Burnette speak for himself, which he will have to do when he and Republican Senator Andrew Brock goes head-to-head. Then we'll see where experience in the statehouse counts.
Report AbuseIneffective : Saturday, August 09, 2008 8:32 PM A leader has a vision and is at the front. Bill Burnette is a visionary and we have seen his visions come to life in Davie County. Andrew Brock is a follower and lags far far behind. He is rated the most ineffective senator in the NC Senate!
Report AbuseUniversal Healthcare for Davie and Rowan Citizens : Saturday, August 09, 2008 8:18 PM To the writer who seems to think the state government does not have the power to provide its citizens with quality healthcare that would be universal, I ask who has the power to license the construction of hospitals? Many citizens of Davie County have attended meetings in Raleigh, showing their support for the construction of a hospital in Davie County. You see, the state government does play a very important part in deciding where hospitals are built. A hospital is a building where people in need of medical attention can go. In a hospital, there are doctors, nurses, and other staff, who provide healthcare, and there is equipment and medicines to be used for the purpose of helping sick people get well. When national political leaders speak of universal healthcare, do they mean all the people of the universe? Of course not! They mean the people of this country. When Bill Burnette speaks of universal healthcare, he means that he will work at the state level to provide universal healthcare to the constituents for whom he will serve. As a state senator, Bill Burnette can and will play a crucial role in deciding members of the licensing boards. We, the citizens of Davie County, know he will appoint members to the board who are cognizant of our healthcare needs. Has Senator Brock worked for healthcare for the people of Davie and Rowan Counties? I have not heard of any legislation he has authored or voted for that would help the the citizens of Davie County with their healthcare. As a matter of fact, I can't think of any relevant legislation that Brock has provided for the people of the 34th District.
Report Abuse: Thursday, June 19, 2008 12:41 PM Brock has done little to nothing for Rowan County beyond politicking on annexation - look at the number of bills he has filed versus the ones that have gotten passed.
Report AbuseWEAK ANSWERS, REGURGITATING THE NATIONAL DOGMA OF OBAMA AND THE DEMOCRAT PARTY : Thursday, June 19, 2008 11:30 AM Burnette accuses Brock of being a politician and then goes into a diatribe of political sound bites he's picked up from Obama and the national democrat party. It's much harder Mr. Burnette when you actually have to give solid answers rather than give stale quotes. He admits not having "answers" about socializing and rationing health care and then resorts to some simplistic notion that he will "work." And accusing Brock of being ineffective? Perhaps he would rather Brock play the insider political games that have left us disillusioned and disgusted with things in Raleigh. I'm proud that Senator Brock has stood up for us. Senator Brock was elected to serve us and not engage in a popularity contest. And he has served us well. Socialized Medicine? I don't think we need Burnette's effectiveness.
Report AbuseBrock is a Winner
Brown missed the point. We rate Brock very high. : Wednesday, June 18, 2008 1:57 PMBrown noted that Brock's representation has never been highly regarded by those who rate legislators. Unfortunately for Brown and Burnette, "those who rate legislators" don't vote for Brock and their opinion matters little if at all. We, the voters, rate Brock as a winner, and we are the ones that matter.
Report Abuse: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 8:39 AM "Burnette said working to get universal health care for all Americans is one of the main reasons he's running for the Senate." Looks as though this over-achiever should be running for Liddy Dole's seat, if his main reason for running is "to get universal healthcare for all Americans." Would someone please tell him this is a State office he has filed for?

Brock Does look after Rowan and Davie Counties : Wednesday, June 18, 2008 7:08 AMOn June 1st, I e-mailed Senator Brock, Representative Loraine Coates and Representative Fred Steen with concerns about Senate Bill 2079 requiring college students to mentor public school children. Senator Brock responded two days later and discussed the issue. I have yet to hear from Loraine Coates and Fred Steen. Mr. Burnette is assuming the general public is ignorant and wouldn't do something as simple as checking Senator Brock's voting history on the internet http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/gascripts/voteHistory/MemberVoteHistory.pl?sSession=2007&nMMUserID=104&sChamber=S Senator Brock has proof of his concern and representation of Rowan and Davie counties. All Mr. Burnette has is a promise to get universal health care but admits he has no clue as how to provide it. Mr. Burnette is another socialist that wants the government to tax hard working people in order to provide insurance to those who won't insure themselves. There are sufficient government programs that provides for the poor (medicare) and the elderly (medicare). I have big problems with universal health care. Check Canada's system. Your life is in the hands of the government. Many patients die waiting for necessary treatments to be approved. Many die because the government refuses to pay for certain medications. Burnette's criticism against Senator Brock is nothing but an air castle. He's just another socialist democrate who wants to Robin Hood the middle class.
Report Abuse: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 6:49 AM The only activity this year Brock has had in Rowan County has been on annexation. He is still consistently ranked at the bottom on effectiveness, and brings nothing back to Rowan or Davie County in terms of state resources. We need someone who will be respected by his/her fellow Senate members and someone who is willing to sit down at the table and deal in Raleigh.

Brock Does His Job Well : Wednesday, June 18, 2008 5:58 AMAndrew Brock is doing a fine job for us in Raleigh. He has sponsored a number of bills opposing forced annexation. He along with Representative Loraine Coates and Representative Fred Steen sponsored a local bill for a moratorium on forced annexation for Rowan County. Brock suported us and spoke at the Salisbury City Council meeting on annexation at the public hearing. He met with us at the Locke Fire Department in April as we celebrated the end of the annexation attempt by the Salisbury City Council. He supported us again and spoke to a group of us in Raleigh on June 4. We voters keep re-electing him. We are happy with the job he is doing for us and the support he gives us.
