Amber alert : Tuesday, June 17, 2008 12:30 AM
If this were your child or relative I believe that you would want every avenue explored possible to bring the child back before something happened to it. The last thing this particular family needs is a bunch of negative responses, what if's and "don't brand the father"! Where are your minds and compassion? And why did the Salisbury Post let these responses get onto the website after the weekend warning about commentators? Have a little sympathy for the family or save your comments for YOUR dinner table!

A father taking his child is not really an Amber alert no matter what the law says. I would not turn him in. This is a family squabble.

AMBER Alert Activation Criteria : Monday, June 16, 2008 1:54 PM
ALL of the following statutory criteria (GS §143B-499.7) must be met before the NC Center for Missing Persons will activate an AMBER Alert. The child is: 17 years old or younger believed to have been abducted, not taken by a parent (unless the child is in danger) not believed to be a runaway or voluntarily missing and the abduction has been reported to and investigated by a law enforcement agency. The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons is the only agency that can activate an AMBER Alert and will do so ONLY at the request of an investigating law enforcement agency. It is then the responsibility of the Center to determine whether there is sufficient identifying data to justify AMBER Alert activation. For instance, there must be sufficient descriptive data on the child, abductor and/or abductor's vehicle for the public to be on the lookout for something. It does no good to activate an AMBER Alert if sufficient information can't be provided to the public. If the abduction of the child is known or suspected to be by a parent of the child, the Center may disseminate information through the AMBER Alert System if the child is believed to be in danger of injury or death.

fat chance : Monday, June 16, 2008 1:50 PM
If this has to do with a father / mother & divorce (State jurisdiction) I don't think it should really be an amber alert. Yeah, NC could see it as kidnapping but once he's in MD they loose jurisdiction and the divorce case goes there. My wife tried to do the same thing by running to another state. I was able to bring it back to the home state only because the other state allowed it. Some states don't and I'd have to have done an extradition to proceed with the divorce. I lost custody anyway but at least it had a fair chance. Without more information it's hard say whether this is a real abduction or just a divorce issue and state politics.

Better info. please. : Monday, June 16, 2008 1:28 PM
Sounds like the "abductor" may be his father so maybe there needs to be a little more information issued to the public before this guy is "branded".
