Spencer Catherine Scarvey has been named a Presidential Scholar at the University of Georgia for the spring 2009 semester. Scarvey has been recognized for the second consecutive semester.

To be named a Presidential Scholar, a student must have achieved a grade point average of 4.0 during the preceding semester and have earned at least 14 hours, with a minimum of 12 hours in courses graded A-F.

A genetics major with an interest in pharmacy as a career choice, Scarvey is an active participant in the Honors Program at UGA and holds a Charter Scholarship. She has also been selected to serve as a resident assistant for the 2009-2010 school year. She is the sister of Quinn Scarvey and the daughter of Dave and Katie Scarvey of Salisbury.

Latin recognition

Several students in the Rowan County Home School Association recently received certificates of achievement from the Christian Latin Society for completing studies in the Latina Christiana curriculum.

Those completing Book I were Toby Cavalier, Tripp Oliphant, Haley Howard, Anna Fisher and Jeremy Morris. Those completing Book II were Seth Davis, Kasey Johnson, Ashlyn Heidt and Brad Clark.

Latina Christiana is an ecclesiastical Latin curriculum for the upper elementary/junior high grades, preparing students for studies at the high school level. Their magistra was Diana Young.

Dean's list

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The following local students were named to the dean's list at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for winter quarter 2008.

Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the dean's list.

- Erin Marie Wootten of Salisbury is seeking a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Design.

- Holly Irene Sexton of Salisbury is seeking a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Design.
