Deadline Monday for Juneteenth entries

The deadline is Monday for all entries in the annual Rowan County Juneteenth Celebration, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at Kelsey Scott Park.The event is free. Donations will be accepted, with proceeds to go toward school supplies for a back-to-school event in August.
The Juneteenth Celebration includes a car and motorcycle show, basketball and softball tournaments and horseshoes.
Children must be accompanied by parents.
There will be live auditions for talent and fashion shows sponsored in part by Noema Records and Entertainment under the management of Kevin Lattimore. Contestants can win a spot in the upcoming Mu-shion show, which is a crossover of fashion and musical arts.
Voices of Salisbury will handle sound and set-up.
As DJ Majesty, Glenn Ford will lead the entertainment, which includes the High Point House of Prayer Praise and Shout Band and Kujimani Creative Arts.
It has been tradition to select a Ms. Juneteenth. Last year's winner, Sharaye Wood, should be on hand to meet the newest winning woman.
Sherry Hawthorne directs the Juneteenth Celebration, as she had done for the past four years. Each year she and her committee try to bring in new events to involve the community.
Previous Juneteenth events have been successes, featuring food, games and music. This year's festivities should have more focus on Gospel than before.
Hawthorne also helps organize the Martin Luther King parade and the yearly back-to-school event.
Sponsors for this year's Juneteenth include Food Lion, Wal-Mart, Cheerwine, Enterprise and First Legacy Community Credit Union.
