Two taken to hospital after wreck downtown Monday

Two people were taken to the hospital after a wreck near downtown around 9 a.m. Monday.

According to Salisbury Fire Department Battalion Chief Todd Overcash, neither person sustained life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Innes and Craige streets in front of Salisbury Motor Co. A Honda Civic was heading west on Innes when it was hit in the driver's side door by a Ford Taurus.

Damage was significant and emergency crews cut the door from the Honda using a hydraulic lever to free the driver.

Two people were sent to Rowan Regional Medical Center for treatment, but officials at the scene were unable to comment on the state of their injuries.

Although the accident occurred downtown, there were few, if any, witnesses.

"I just seen 'em spinnin' around the road here," said Steve Stoner. Stoner was arriving to work at the Salisbury Motor Co. and only managed to see the final seconds of the incident.

Joel Owens, also of Salisbury Motor Co., didn't see the wreck, but he saw the results. And he said it's nothing new.

"If I've seen one accident, I've seen a thousand," he said.

Owens said he sees collisions and fender-benders near the dealership "all the time."

The commotion caused by the crash included several fire engines, ambulances and EMS responders. A line of more than seven heavy commercial trucks was stuck along East Innes Street for nearly half an hour while the cars and debris were cleared.
