The re-enactment group the 26th Regiment N.C. Troops is recruiting new members.

The 26th Regiment is the largest single Civil War re-enactment unit in North Carolina with over 200 members.

The 150th anniversary battles, commemorating some of the most important engagements of the Civil War, will begin in April of 2011 with a re-enactment at Fort Sumter, S.C., the original flash point of the war.

The 26th was started in 1981 by descendants of the original N.C. 26th, which fought in the war. The group hails from Rutherfordton, but its members come from all over the state. The group also preserves monuments, grave markers and flags from the period.

For more information, contact Regimental Commander Col. Skip Smith at 828-396-0702 or Regimental Communications Officer Major Randal Garrison at 828-432-7505. Visit the website at www.26nc.org.
