After 50 years of selling yearbooks to students at East Rowan High School, a celebration was in order.

What better way to celebrate than to have an eating contest with contestants scarfing down the Apple Baking Co.'s Apple Ugly pastries?

Kerry Stahl, yearbook director at East Rowan, selected the five participants after they signed up prior to the event.

They were East Rowan students Amber Ledbetter, Alex Lawson, Coleton Boone, Summer Taylor and Chris Hicks.

Lawson won the competition, and Hicks was first runner-up.

The first Apple Ugly Eating Contest was held at the Faith Fourth of July celebration this past summer. Lawson has been invited to participate in the second annual event this July.

"I'm going to practice with the leftovers," Lawson said.

Lawson might also be advised to run a couple of laps after devouring seven of the calorie-filled Apple Uglies.

Poll
What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
