Bright Ideas grants

EnergyUnited and North Carolina's Touchstone Energy cooperatives have earmarked at least $500,000 for classroom-based projects through the Bright Ideas Education Grant Program for 2008-09.

Teachers can learn about the program and apply online at www.ncbrightideas.com. Grants of up to $2,000 are available. Teachers who submit their application by Aug. 28 will be entered in a drawing for a $500 Visa gift card.

All North Carolina certified K-12 teachers are eligible for a Bright Ideas grant.

Professor honored

Dozens of Pfeiffer University graduates recently honored Dr. Steve C. Dial during the fifth annual George Pfeiffer Symposium.

A professor emeritus of biology and distinguished Pfeiffer alumnus, Dial came to Pfeiffer in 1963 as a faculty member. He retired in 2003.

Dial's son, Chris, a 1986 Pfeiffer graduate, is leading the fundraising effort to renovate and name the Harris Greenhouse to honor his father. Glass Garden Builders of Connecticut, the original builder of the university's Lord and Burnham Greenhouse, has been retained to update and restore the structure.

Dial was a biology professor, past chair of the department and past division head at Pfeiffer. He is also a well-respected ecologist, biologist and scholar. He earned his undergraduate degree from Pfeiffer College and both his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina. He and wife Carolyn live in Misenheimer.
