Other nominees for the award were Amanda Griffin, Kay Meilinger, Nadine Potts, Joy Blakeney and Suzie Dinse.

Surratt, a Salisbury native, was one of the "100 Great Registered Nurses" in 2007 picked by the Great 100 RN Excellence Program in North Carolina.

A nursing graduate from UNC-Charlotte (bachelor's degree) and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (associate's degree), Surratt started as a staff nurse in Women's Health. She is now a women's health educator, responsible for staff development and patient and community education.
