Staff report

One person was killed and three others injured in a head-on collision on Old Mocksville Road Friday night.

The accident at 5080 Old Mocksville Road was called in at 7:58 p.m., according to John Sharp, shift supervisor for Rowan County EMS. The victim, Julio Santiago, was pronounced dead after rescue workers freed him from his 1998 Honda Civic.

Trooper A.J. Carpenter of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Santiago was traveling south “at a very high rate of speed” when he crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Audi head-on.

The driver of the Audi and her two children were injured in the collision and transported to Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The first Rowan County EMS ambulance responding to the scene broke down and had to be towed in. “The unit itself was filled with smoke,” Sharp said. “There may have been some kind of small electrical fire, but I’m not sure on that.”

A Rowan Rescue Squad vehicle and a second EMS ambulance arrived afterward to transport the three injured people.

Carpenter said alcohol was not a factor in the collision, “just high speed.”

We too live in this vicinity and have experienced a number of drivers rounding these curves by driving beyond the middle line. It is unnerving not knowing if they will get back on their side in time.

I'm glad it was the "careless, SPEEDING driver" that was the one who died and not the innocent victims. I've seen driving like this all over the county. It makes me angry! Usually it's the "drunk driver" that walks away while the innocent victim dies. What a senseless waste! It never had to happen. My sympathy goes out to the innocent family that was probably just trying to get back home.

Could have been us : Sunday, May 11, 2008 12:16 AM

I was playing tennis with my 12-year-old son at Ellis Park when they wreck happened. We were about to head home in that direction when the sirens began to sound. It was late and we had not had supper so every five minutes or so leading up to the accident I had been thinking it was about time to go. That could easily have been us.

This was right in front of my house and one car laid in my ditch. My sister, a friend, and I arrived about 2 minutes after the wreck. It was awful and car parts where everywhere. Many people dont feel they need to slow down around this curve but speeding has been a HUGE factor to many wrecks for the 12 years we have resided there.I'm so sorry to here about the injured and the loss. Your all in my prayers. Please be careful and slow down.
