North Rowan Middle hosts curriculum night

North Rowan Middle School held its End-of-Grade Curriculum Night last Wednesday.

Curriculum Night is an annual event that offers parents, students and the community current information on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for sixth, seventh and eighth grades and required End-of-Grade or End-of-Course tests.

Principal Darrell McDowell introduced teachers, administrators, the intervention specialist, curriculum coach, literacy coach and other support staff who contribute to the success of the students.

Those in attendance visited grade-level stations where teachers gave multimedia presentations and handouts explaining the curriculum and the testing process.

Teachers offered parents tips on how to help their children succeed. Both parents and students were encouraged to express their concerns and ask questions pertaining to curriculum and testing.

In addition, North Rowan Middle School Exploratory, Physical Education, AIG and EC departments shared information on strategies used in their subject areas, and the school's media coordinator provided an extensive list of helpful Web sites. Links to these Web sites also are available on the school's EdGate page.

Holly Morrow with the Adolescent Family Enrichment Council was the guest presenter. She spoke briefly about and provided handouts on available community resources, parental communication skills and how to strengthen the family bond with adolescents.

Tanisha Geter, outreach coordinator for North Rowan Middle, answered questions related to the Communities In Schools Program.

At the conclusion of the presentations, participants ate a Southern-style meal of barbecue, pinto beans, greens, slaw, corn bread, dessert and tea in the school's cafeteria.

This year's Curriculum Night had triple the attendance of last year.
