Education briefs: Helms inducted into honor society

Friday, April 17, 2009 3:00 AM  |  Printer friendly version | E-mail to a friend | Julie Helms was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Helms, majoring in dental health, is the daughter of Tony A. and Judy W. Helms of Salisbury.

Established in 1918 by two-year college presidents, Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest honor society serving two-year colleges around the world. Students must rank in the top 20 percent of the class to be invited to membership and must maintain high academic standing during their enrollment in the two-year college.

National society

Joshua K. Burr of China Grove has been named to the National Society of High School Scholars.

Burr, a student at Carson High School, was also selected as an ambassador to represent the NSHSS for his school.

RCCC classes

The Human Resources Development (HRD) Program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will offer multiple, short-term computer and medical office skills classes during the summer months.

Class fees are $55; however, individuals who are unemployed may qualify for a tuition waiver. Classes are offered at multiple sites, including RCCC's North Campus and Goodwill Industries in Salisbury, RCCC's South Campus and Cabarrus Business & Technology Center in Concord, and the Cloverleaf Plaza in Kannapolis.

- Introduction to Computers — classes beginning in May, June, July and August;

- Computer Empowerment — classes beginning in May, June July and August;

- Keyboarding Lab — classes beginning in May and July;

- Medical Terminology — classes beginning in May and July; and

- Medical Office Skills — classes beginning in May, June and July.

The HRD Program at RCCC provides short-term, pre-employment training and counseling designed for unemployed and under-employed adults. HRC courses include a variety of classes designed to assist adult learners conduct job searches, build skills needed for employment, explore career options and learn basic computer skills.
