Staff reportA 5-year-old child was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital following a grinding collision on N.C. 150 around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Jason Ortego Alvarado, 5, of Statesville was strapped into a child seat in the back seat of a 1996 Honda Accord that pulled into the path of a tractor-trailer.

The child was reportedly taken to Carolinas Medical Center, but no information was available on his condition late Wednesday night.

The child's mother, Elida Ortega Alvarado, 36, of Statesville, was driving the Honda on Airport Road.

Trooper Bradley P. Potts of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Alvarado attempted to make a left turn off of Airport Road onto N.C. 150 and turned into the path of a 2004 Freightliner tractor-trailer owned by Atrium Windows and driven by Charles W. Rinehart, 66, of Danbury.

Potts said the truck struck the car on the left side of the driver's side door at an angle, sending the vehicle spinning.

Both vehicles went off the left side of the road.

Potts cited Alvarado with not having a driver's license and failure to yield.

She was transported to Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The accident tied up traffic for an hour or more.
