Two West Rowan residents out for a Sunday ride ended up being transported to hospitals after separate mishaps — a motorbike wreck and a fall from a horse.

Both incidents occurred around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Teddy Will Phillips, 46, of 118 Oak Hill Drive, Cleveland, crashed his 1994 Kawasaki Vulcan bike at the 4470 block of Amity Hill Road.

Trooper R.T. Howard with the N.C. Highway Patrol said Phillips was going west toward Iredell County when he went off the road to the right and struck a ditch and a utility pole.

Phillips, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown a short distance.

He was conscious at the scene.

The West Rowan Fire Department assisted at the scene and set up a landing zone for the Carolina Medical Center medical helicopter. The bike was destroyed.

Trooper Howard said at this point, there is no charges.

Woodleaf firefighters and a Rowan EMS unit responded to a report of a teenage girl who fell from a horse.

The girl was riding a horse in the 2900 block of Woodleaf Barber Road when a dog ran out in the road barking, causing the horse to react and the girl to fall, according to Artie Watson, chief of the Woodleaf Fire Department.

The girl's name was not immediately available.

Watson said she was conscious and alert. She sustained a bump on the head and a laceration.

She was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center.

The teenager was apparently riding with friends or other family members. Her parents came to the scene.

What do you think of the legislature putting parts of Rowan County in three different congressional districts and two state Senate districts?
  • I like it; Rowan will have more members of Congress and the state Senate
  • I don't like it; it's hard enough to figure out who my congressman is
  • I don't care about politics, so it makes no difference to me
