Rockwell Rural is Rowan County's latest volunteer fire department to receive a federal grant.
U.S. Rep. Howard Coble announced that Rockwell Rural has been awarded $53,276 from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
Rockwell Rural will use the money to purchase new turnout-gear cleaning equipment and install a new ventilation system in the fire station.
Coble also announced grants for other fire departments in his 6th district. Franklinville in Randolph County received $59,512.
"These grants allow our first responders to enhance their abilities to protect the health and safety of our communities," Coble said.
