KANNAPOLIS — Two artists from India likely will paint the massive domed ceiling inside the Core Laboratory Building.
David H. Murdock flew the artists to Kannapolis this week to take a look at the interior dome of the centerpiece of the N.C. Research Campus. Murdock said they were intimidated by the idea of painting 60 feet in the air, but he assured them that they would be safe and reminded them of Michelangelo's masterpiece on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The sole owner of Dole Food Do., Murdock is helping to design the mural, which "rest assured, will feature lots of fruits and vegetables," he said.
The Research Campus will focus on improving the nutritional value of foods.
Murdock met the artists on a recent trip to New Delhi.
Research Campus leaders said the Core Lab will open in April, although instruments and equipment will continue to arrive throughout the spring and summer. Parts of the lab should be operational soon after opening.
