Maryville College

Brynn Dailey of Salisbury has been named to the dean's list for the 2008 fall semester at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.

A 2005 graduate of Salisbury High School, she is the daughter of Reggie and Lea Dailey of Salisbury.

Randolph Community

Rebecca M. Helms of China Grove has made the fall 2008 semester honor list at Randolph Community College in Asheboro.

Leadership conference

Meredith Parker of Cannon School participated in "Picture Yourself ... Making A Difference," a leadership conference for high school women held at Meredith College. The conference, with about 95 students participating, featured team-building sessions and a session on women's history, among other activities.

Parker is the daughter of Bobby and Tammy Parker of Kannapolis.

Stanly Quiz Bowl

Stanly County Public Library and Stanly Community College hosted the 29th Local Quiz Bowl on Feb. 14 at Stanly Community College's Kelley Building.

The Gray Stone Day School team won. The team members were Joseph Sutlive, Davis Goodnight, Carson Blackwelder, Tyler Waugh, Cally Womick, Heather Van Wallendael, Richard Scott, Adam Silverstrim, William Wallace and Becky Robinson.

The coaches were Sheri Efird and Jeff Walter. The other teams to compete were Albemarle High School, Anson High School, North Stanly High School and West Stanly High School.

International award

Edwin "Ed" Ladd, a 1967 graduate of West Rowan High, who completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, was named International Superintendent of the Year in San Francisco by the Association for the Advancement of International Education.

Ladd, who was nominated by U.S. Ambassador Chase Untermeyer last spring, was recognized among 300 international schools throughout the world for his outstanding leadership in education at The American School of Doha in Qatar.

Ladd, who grew up in Salisbury, and attended J.F. Hurley School and West Rowan, has worked in international education for the past 26 years and has lived in London, Tel Aviv, Taipei and Doha. He is married to Carol Weppner and is the son of Peter and Gloria Ladd of Sherills Ford Road.During the past six years, Ladd has served as the director of The American School of Doha, the fastest growing international school in the world, and has just completed a $50 million building project.

DCCC Ambassador

Twenty-two Davidson County Community College students have been selected as 2009-2010 Student Ambassadors.

The new DCCC Ambassadors include Aurel Alson of Thomasville, who is majoring in histotechnology. She is the daughter of Carolyn and Norman Alston of Salisbury.

Ambassadors help with registration and orientation, give campus tours, serve as graduation marshals, volunteer for the DCCC Eighth Grade Career Fair, Habitat for Humanity, Davidson County Special Olympics, serving meals at homeless shelters and visiting local nursing home residents.
