A 14-year-old boy who was accidentally shot with a shotgun at a Woodleaf home Wednesday is in stable condition, according to Rowan County authorities.

The boy, who was at a Needmore Road home, was shot by another 14-year-old boy.

He underwent emergency surgery Wednesday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office officials have said the teen was shot in the left side of his abdominal area with a Rossi .410 gauge single-barrel shotgun.

The two teens went outside about 11 a.m. Wednesday to shoot the gun. One teen was holding the gun and tried to lower the hammer on the weapon or put the hammer in a de-cocked position. As he did so, he accidentally let go of the hammer about halfway down, which caused the shotgun to discharge.

The boys immediately called 911. The homeowner, Rebecca Cranford, was issued a citation for not properly securing the weapon.
