N.C. Department of Transportation contractors and Norfolk Southern will be making roadway and track improvements to the railroad crossing at 110 East 22nd St. in Kannapolis prompting a closure of the crossing.

The work will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May. 2 and is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 21. It is part of the Salisbury to Kannapolis Railroad Improvements project, which involves constructing approximately 11 miles of second track between Salisbury and Kannapolis, as well as extending Kimball Road from Main Street to Chapel Street, and constructing a two-track railroad bridge carrying NCRR tracks over Kimball Road.

Motorists will use North Main Street, East 18th Street, Cannon Boulevard and Linda Avenues as the signed detour route.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
