TYRO – Just before the halftime buzzer sounded, Salisbury’s Mario Capito tossed up a long three-point attempt.

The ball thumped hard onto the backboard and banked into the net to give the Hornets a 23-16 lead.

That’s sort of typical of the season for West Davidson’s girls.

The Hornets (13-9, 5-4) used their height advantage and athleticism to down West, 55-39, Tuesday night at Crim Court.

West (0-22, 0-9) led at 7-6, but Salisbury gradually pulled away to a 15-point advantage early in the fourth quarter continued to add to the lead.

The two teams were deadlocked 9-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Salisbury outscored West 25-12 in the second half.

“I was hoping our 3-2 that we’ve been playing recently would have been up for the challenge, but we weren’t moving our feet on defense and (Tyzarea) Alexander for them was the difference,” said West coach Jamie Payne. “She didn’t play the last time we played them.”

The difference in the previous encounter was 58-50.

Alexander, a 5-foot-7 forward, had 17 points as did Capito.

“We missed a lot of easy shots, and when we missed them they were putting them back,” Payne said.

Freshman Karlie Cook led West with 13 points. Breanna Leonard is the only senior on the team.

“Like I told them before the game, after this season we’ll be doing post-season, off-season stuff,” Payne said. “Next year we’ll have a new team and we can only improve from here.”

West Davidson plays at East Davidson on Friday.
