West Rowan’s girls stayed unbeaten in the SPC with a 48-42 win at Cox Mill.
Egypt Alexander scored 17 points for the Falcons (21-2, 17-0) . Mary Sobataka had 14. Khaila Hall had nine.
Madison Rinkus scored 12 for the Chargers (7-16, 7-10).

Hickory Ridge’s girls won 68-60 against Carson in Harrisburg on Tuesday.
Gabby Smith (15), Laura McManimen (14) and Jiera Shears (13) scored in double figures for the Ragin’ Bulls (20-2, 16-1).
Olivia Gabriel (16 points), McKenzie Gadson (15) and Kailie Ketchie (12) led the Cougars (13-10, 9-8).

East Rowan girls won 45-38 at Central Cabarrus on Tuesday to clinch a spot in the SPC tournament.
Shenell Pharr scored 15 points for the Mustangs (12-11, 7-10), Jocelyn Lowe had eight, and Courtney Wagner and Brittany Small scored seven each.
Small had nine rebounds.
Mahaley Holit led the Vikings (11-12, 7-10) with 17 points. Justice Wallace scored 13.

In SPC boys action, Central Cabarrus beat East Rowan 68-53, Cox Mill won 67-57 against West Rowan, Hickory Ridge won 96-79 against Carson, and Concord won 75-71 against Northwest Cabarrus.

College softball
Catawba’s Carley Tysinger was named SAC Softball Pitcher of the Week. The senior struck out 23 hitters in 12 innings and was 2-0.

College basketball
Livingstone hosts Fayetteville State tonight, while Catawba is on the road at Newberry.
Former Salisbury standout Doreen Richardson plays for the Fayetteville State women’s team.

Prep soccer
Salisbury’s Landon Goodman and Cristian Uribe have been named to play in this summer’s East-West All-Star Game.
The game will be played on July 19 at MacPherson Stadium.

Prep swimming
Carson freshman Brynne Hardman qualified for the 3A State Championships in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.
Hardman finished fourth in the Central Regional in Greensboro in the 200 IM (2:20.8) and was eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.73).
Carson’s 200 free relay team finished seventh in the regional in 1:50.79 and qualified for the state meet. That unit includes the Hardman sisters, Brynne and Shea, and freshmen Olivia Shorter and Taylor Sever.
Carson’s girls finished 11th in the regional.

East Rowan’s Chance Brown qualified for the 3A State Championships. He was eighth in the regional in the 200 freestyle (2:03.40).

Northern Guilford won the 3A Central Regional. Six SPC teams finished in the top 10 in the regional. Robinson, Cox Mill, Concord and Northwest Cabarrus finished 2-5.
South Rowan was 13th.

Prep indoor track
The indoor track state championships are coming up this weekend.
North Rowan’s Michael Streater is the defending champ in the high jump in 1A/2A. The 1A/2A Championships will be held in Winston-Salem on Saturday.
Streater is seeded at 6 feet, 2 inches. Franklinton’s Jivel Teasley is the top seed at 6-4.
Chevy Blaire is the top seed for North’s girls. She’s seeded fifth in the shot put (34-3).

A number of Rowan athletes should contend in Friday’s 3A Championships.
East Rowan’s Brittany Small is the defending champ in the high jump. She’s seeded at 5-4. That’s tied for the top seed with Swansboro’s Maggie Bamber.
East’s Taylor Kirk will compete in the wheelchair shot put.
Carson’s Chloe Kirpatrick could place high in the pole vault. She’s seeded third at 10 feet.
West Rowan’s Josie Heglar is seeded 5th in the 1000 meters (3:10.07).

Carson’s Zachary Marchinko is seeded fourth in the 1600 (4:29.01) and third in the 3200 (9:31.96).
West Rowan’s J.T. Sanders is seeded third in the 55 meters (6.34 seconds) and the 300 (35.39).
West’s Juwan Houston is seeded third in the 55 hurdles (7.80).
West’s Joel Thomas-Morales is seeded third in the triple jump (41-11).
West’s boys relay teams are strong. The 4×200 unit (1:29.00) is seeded second behind Sun Valley.

Local golf
GARS members played their own foursomes at McCanless.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Donald Martin with a net of 68.17.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Bill Reid with a net of 67.00.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ken Miller with a net of 71.69.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Harold Caudill with a net of 79.28.
Winsten Mahaffey, 79, shot a 75.

The Hutters Baseball Golf Tournament to support an 11U travel team will be held at Warrior on Saturday, Feb. 27. The shotgun start is at 1 p.m.
The format is four-man Captain’s Choice. The cost is $60 per player or $240 per team.
Cost includes a hotdog dinner that can be eaten before the round or at the turn.

7th-grade hoops
North Rowan’s boys won 48-26 against China Grove. Javon Smith scored eight points for North (4-1). Zay Davis and Jaharion Graham scored six points. Jyrick Scott and James Gladden had five each.
North plays Southeast on Thursday.

Jayvee girls
Hickory Ridge beat Carson 39-22 on Friday, the first loss for the Cougars (19-1).
Montana Gurganious scored 14 for Carson.
Skylar Aardema scored 13 for Hickory Ridge.

Hurley YMCA
Register for girls volleyball (grades 4-8) at the Hurley YMCA through Feb. 27.
Register for spring soccer (boys and girls, Pre-K through 8th grade) through March 21. Register for flag football (boys and girls, Pre-K through 8th grade) through March 21. The cost for all three programs is $42 for Y members and $70 for potential members.
