The Cabarrus County Board of Education will meet this evening to discuss a 10-year facilities plan to provide relief to 15 to 20 schools across the district. The proposed plan will discuss construction of new facilities and renovations or replacement of old facilities.

In the proposal attached to the board’s online agenda, Cabarrus County Schools have been seeing an enrollment growth of 500 to 700 students per year with the potential to have a growth of 5,900 students within five years. The plan will ensure that facilities are available to meet enrollment demand, including a new, centrally located high school and a new middle school in the western part of the county. A proposed elementary school in Harrisburg is also mentioned.

Buildings highlighted for renovation or replacement include Coltrane Webb, Beverly Hills and R. Brown McAllister elementary schools. The estimated cost of the 10-year project is $264 million. The plan also proposes a year-round calendar or making use of a “double-shift” school, with separate classes running from 6 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. to alleviate overcrowding.

The board will also discuss transportation for students to Wolf Meadow Elementary School, and totals on students who have opted out of attending the magnet school.

The Kannapolis City Board of Education will receive updates on STEM programs at its monthly meeting this evening. The board will meet today at 6 p.m. in the board rRoom located at 100 Denver Street, Kannapolis. The board will also discuss financial amendments and transfers and recognize Gordon Snyder, who was named National Music Educator of the Year by Music and Arts.
