Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball starts with bang

Catawba senior Carley Tysinger had one of the greatest games of her sensational softball career on Saturday.
Tysinger struck out 13, with no walks, in a 5-1 win at Armstrong. She also won the game by hitting a grand slam after the contest went to extra innings.
Gina Gerone drove in the other run for Catawba (2-0). Kristen Stennard had two hits.

In a 9-4 win against Lincoln Memorial earlier on Saturday, Katherine Shumaker drove in six runs for the Indians.
Shumaker and Morgan Brann homered.
Tysinger was the winning pitcher.

Golf: Double eagle
Wayne Bostian made a double eagle at Rolling Hills. He holed a 5-iron on his second shot on the par-5 No. 18 hole.
Derek Lipe, Richard Jarnagin and Hal Jordan witnessed the rare feat.

Catawba men fall
A desperate Catawba comeback fell just short in a 91-88 SAC men’s basketball loss at Carson-Newman on Saturday.
Catawba trailed by 13 points at 86-73 with 1:12 remaining but fought back to get as close as 90-88 in the final seconds.
Jerrin Morrison hit two late 3-pointers, 14 seconds part, and Rakeen Brown made another one with two seconds left. Brown missed on a 3-point heave at the horn after Carson-Newman made one of two at the foul line.
Catawba led 47-42 at halftime and led by eight points early in the second half before Carson-Newman rallied.
Morrison scored 21 points, while Jameel Taylor scored 19 and Brown had 12.
Sawyer Williams led the Eagles with 21 points.

LC men lose
Livingstone’s men’s basketball team lost 88-78 at Shaw on Saturday despite putting five in double figures.
Ty Newman led the Blue Bears in the CIAA contest with 17 points.
Also scoring in double figures were Daryl Traynham (13), Eric Dubose (12), Ramel Belfield (11) and Jimmy Wilson (10).
Newman had six assists, while Traynham registered five.
David Madol led Shaw with 19 points. Junior guard Larry Richardson II scored his 1,000th point.
Livingstone (7-10, 4-7) forced 19 turnovers while committing only nine, but Shaw (9-14, 6-5) shot better.
Shaw shot 50 percent from the floor and was 10-for-20 on 3-pointers.

Shaw tops LC women
Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost 80-71 at Shaw on Saturday afternoon in a CIAA contest.
The Blue Bears (11-9, 6-5) had a big edge on the glass (58-40), but they couldn’t overcome 24 turnovers and dismal free-throw shooting (4-for-16).
Ariana DeJesus paced the Blue Bears with 18 points. Amber Curtis scored 16, and Kyala Searcy had 10.
Wende Foster, DeJesus and Searcy had eight rebounds each.
Leading Shaw (18-5, 10-1) was Kaula Jacks with 14 points.
Shaw has won nine straight games.

Prep basketball
A.L. Brown’s boys won for the first time this season in conference play on Friday, topping Mallard Creek 69-60 in overtime.
Jaylon Neal scored 25 points for the Wonders.Zach Williamson scored 13, and Damon Johnson had eight.

Hamsah Nasirildeen scored 17 points as Concord romped 91-48 against West Rowan’s boys on Friday.
Concord led by 23 points after the first quarter.
The Spiders are tied with Robinson for first place in the SPC. They have 15-1 records entering the final week of the regular season.
Robinson hosts Concord on Friday.

South Rowan announced that it will play Robinson on Monday instead of Tuesday.

Prep swimming
Regionals were held on Friday and Saturday.
Top-12 regional finishers in 1A/2A qualified for the state meet, while top eight regional finishers in 3A and 4A advanced to the state meet.
South Rowan qualifiers for the state meet included the 200 medley relay team of Stetson Johnson, John Fulton, Andrew Perry and Dakota Dennis that finished eighth.
Johnson was sixth in the 100 backstroke. Perry was seventh in the 500 freestyle.
South’s Madyson Campbell won first place in diving.

Salisbury swimmers did well in the 1A/2A West Regional in Huntersville.
Kathryn Morrison was regional champion in the 100 backstroke and took second in the 100 butterfly.
Amelia Steinman qualified with a 10th in the 100 free and 12th in the 50 free.
Callie Alexander qualified with an 11th-pace effort in the 100 breaststroke.
The 400 free relay team of Michaela Lemmon, Sharmi Amin, Steinman and Morrison also qualified.

Salisbury boys state qualifiers included the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams (Roarke Burton, Matt Woolly, Ethan Knorr, Keegan Dillon).
Knorr was fourth in the 200 IM and second in the 500 freestyle.
Burton was 11th in the 100 free and 11th in the 100 backstroke.
Woolly was sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

Prep wrestling
Individual wrestling regionals will be contested on Feb. 12-13.
Regional sites include Asheboro (3A Midwest), South Stokes (2A Midwest), Southwest Guilford (4A Midwest) and Hough (4A West).

West Forsyth routed Holly Springs 57-10 on Saturday for the 4A dual-team championship.
The other champions are Rosewood (1A), Newton-Conover (2A) and Morehead (3A).

College softball
Belmont Abbey’s Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) pitched a three-hitter in a 7-1 win against Wingate on Friday.

Sydney Poole (East Rowan) and Kaleigh Troutman (East Rowan) got off to good starts for Pfeiffer.
Poole didn’t allow a run in relief appearances in her first two games. Troutman drove in three runs as Pfeiffer beat Claflin and lost to Newberry.

Morgan Hendrix (Davie) had three hits as Wingate swept Erskine in a doubleheader on Saturday.

College tennis
Catawba’s tennis teams swept Johnson C. Smith 9-0 on Saturday.

College hoops
Pfeiffer’s men won for the first time ever at North Greenville on Saturday, taking a 71-63 victory behind 27 points by sophomore Josh Calhoun.

Michael Bowman (North Rowan) and Malik Ford (North Rowan) contributed two points each to J.C. Smith’s 97-78 CIAA win against Fayetteville State on Saturday.

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) scored eight points as UNC Pembroke beat Young Harris 69-62 on Saturday.

Carson jayvee girls
Carson’s jayvee girls won again on Friday. They beat Northwest Cabarrus 30-22.
Tayler Harwood scored 14 points. Montana Gurganious had seven, and Zoie Lee scored six.
Katie Jewell and Sarah Christie were defensive standouts.

7th-grade basketball
Knox’s boys won 62-41 against North Rowan Middle.
Zay Davis led with 17 points. Nick Colson scored 14. Jaharion Graham and Javon Smith scored nine each. Kendrell Goodes scored eight, and Jatice Wactor had five.
North plays China Grove on Monday.

North Hills hoops
The North Hills elementary school boys won 41-29 against Sacred Heart.
Davis West scored 13 points. Kemon O’Kelly had 12, and Que Sloan had 11.

Elizabeth Jones scored 10 points for the Eagles.

Sacred Heart’s middle school girls won 24-16 against Salisbury Academy.
Rachel McCullough led the Dolphins with 16 points. Caroline Cardelle was a defensive standout.
