Sinnott to speak on Shakespeare at Catawba

At the next Catawba College Community Forum on Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Tom Smith Auditorium of Ralph W. Ketner Hall, Bethany Sinnott will provide an introduction into the mysteries of what some have argued is the greatest play ever written, William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Admission is free.

New scholarship at Catawba

Thanks to a new endowed scholarship recently established at Catawba College, the Kirkland surname will be even better remembered in the college’s history. Gordon A. Kirkland, a 1970 alumnus and former Chiefs Club coordinator, and wife Sandra of Clemmons have established an endowed scholarship at Catawba College in honor of their son, David Kirkland of Salisbury, a 2012 alumnus and director of technical services in Catawba’s Conferences Office. The scholarship will be awarded to students based solely on their need.

Sacred Heart celebrates National Catholic Schools Week

This week, Sacred Heart School joins Catholic schools all across the nation in celebrating National Catholic Schools Week.

More than 6,500 Catholic schools observe this annual celebration week with Masses, open houses, community service and other special activities that emphasize the value Catholic school education provides to 2 million young people nationwide.

On Monday, Sacred Heart began its celebration week by inviting Mayor Karen Alexander to daily morning assembly to read the Catholic School Week Proclamation. Throughout the week, students have worn specific colors to represent daily themes: red for love, green for growth, red/white/blue for patriotism and Panther colors black/blue for team spirit.

They chose to support Rowan Helping Ministries as their service project by collecting needed items for RHM clients such as toothbrushes, shampoo, gloves, socks, and school supplies for any children. In addition, SHCS makes this week their “bee” week: Geography Bee, Spelling Bee and Bible Bee to include many student contestants and school assemblies.
