Area Sports Briefs: Sherrill scores 1,000th point for Augusta

Augusta junior Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 25 points in Saturday’s 76-59 win against Shaw and surpassed 1,000 points for his career.
Sherrill also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals on Saturday.
Sherrill has scored 1,007 points.

Chase Mounce scored 23 points to lead Tusculum (4-1) to an 81-74 win against Pfeiffer on Saturday in Greeneville, Tenn.
Andrew Guerrero made five 3-pointers for the Falcons (4-3) and scored 25 points.

Livingstone lost 68-56 to host Lander in a tournament in Greenwood, S.C.
Jimmy Wilson scored 12 points while K.T. Langley had 11, but the Blue Bears (1-5) couldn’t overcome 32.7-percent shooting.
J.R. Washington scored 21 for the Bearcats (5-2).

Women’s hoops
Shay Steele (West Rowan) had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Morehead State in Saturday’s 75-71 loss at Chicago State.

Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) shot 2-for-2 from the floor and had three rebounds to help Richmond beat Wichita State 63-50 on Friday.

UNC Pembroke’s Avery Locklear (South Rowan) had 10 points and six rebounds in Saturday’s 63-55 win against Mount Olive.

Men’s soccer
On Monday, Pfeiffer’s soccer team (23-0) heads to the Final Four in Pensacola, Fla.
Pfeiffer will play in a semifinal on Thursday, Dec. 3, against Charleston, W.Va. Cal Poly Pomona will take on Rockhurst (Mo.) in the othe semifinal.
The championship game is Dec. 5.
Pfeiffer is the only team in NCAA soccer — D-I, D-II or D-III — with a perfect record.
Pfeiffer’s Nathan Regis is the leading scorer in Division II with 29 goals.
Pfeiffer beat Wingate, Young Harris and Palm Beach Atlantic to win a regional championship.

Rowan Hurricanes
Rowan Hurricanes basketball tryouts will be on Dec. 5 from 11-1.
The Hurricanes are looking for serious basketball players in grades 4-7.
Tryouts are at Christ United Methodist Church, 3401 Mooresville Road, Salisbury. There will be a tryout fee of $2 to help cover the cost of the gym.

Prep wrestling
In the Thanksgiving tournament hosted by Salisbury, Jibri Cowan (132 pounds), Darius Jackson (160) and Marquese Peele (heavyweight) were champions in their weight classes.
The Hornets tied for third with West Rowan.

Prep girls hoops
In a 55-38 loss to Winston-Salem Atkins, Ashlyn Hampton had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Davie (2-2).
