Area Sports Briefs: Big win for North volleyball

Brianna White had 32 assists, 88 sets and four blocks as North Rowan’s volleyball team beat West Davidson 25-17, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-22 on Tuesday in Spencer.
It was the first CCC loss for the Green Dragons.
North (6-12, 4-3 CCC) got 14 kills from Aliyah Farmer. Makala Lytton had 10 kills and 21 digs. Bil’lizah Connor had 10 kills. Chevy Blaire had eight kills. Navi Joyner also played a big role in North’s win.
“We wouldn’t let the ball hit the floor tonight,” North coach Sandy Lytton said. “Brianna was all over. She played a fantastic game.”

West Rowan swept Central Cabarrus 25-17, 25-23 and 25-17 in SPC action on Monday.
Mady Myers and Hannah Moseley had seven kills each. Taylor Martin had 22 digs. Mikayla Graham had three aces.

Gray Stone beat Queens Grant 25-18, 29-27 and 25-19 in YVC play on Tuesday.
Ivy Overcash led the Knights (13-1, 6-1 YVC) with nine kills. Roni Boss had 13 assists, and Caroline Cody had 12.

Prep soccer
Colin Noone scored two goals and Griffin Kent had one in Cox Mill’s 3-1 SPC win against Carson. Key Andrews had two assists for the Chargers.
Raunel Vasquez scored for the Cougars.
Both teams are 9-1 in the league.

South Rowan won 7-0 against East Rowan. Seven different Raiders scored.
Walker Joyce had a goal and three assists. Adrian Figueroa had a goal and an assist. Cameron Corriher had the shutout and also scored on a PK.

Prep cross country
Alex Yang ran 19:29 and led Salisbury to a win in a three-team meet with West Davidson and North Rowan.
Second was Salisbury’s Matt Washko in 20:11. Finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, were Hornets Keegan Dillon, Roarke Burton and Sam McNeely.
Coby Weant had the best time for North Rowan.

In the girls race, West Davidson topped Salisbury and North.
Salisbury’s Ellen Simons was the individual winner in 22:53.
Salisbury’s Mary Kaufmann was fifth. The other scoring Hornets were Molly Bourque, Michaela Lemmon and Amelia Steinman.
Aubree Cain was seventh and led North Rowan, while Meghan Karczewski placed eighth.

Prep tennis

Salisbury won 6-0 at West Davidson on Monday in CCC tennis.

NCHSAA
Cidney Bowers of South Stanly High and Jamal Wheeler of Polk County won the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards,
Bowers, a junior on the South Stanly volleyball team, led the Bulls to three wins.
Wheeler, a senior quarterback, rushed for 236 yards and scored a school-record six touchdowns, rushing for scores of 12, 11, 72, 32 and 54 yards and adding an 82-yard kickoff return TD.

College golf
Lee University won the North Georgia Fall Invitational men’s golf tournament by four strokes over Carson-Newman.
Catawba finished 17th.
Freshman Trey Burton shot a two-under-par 70 on Tuesday and led Catawba with his 53rd place finish and a three-round total of 223.

College volleyball
Lenoir-Rhyne fended off an upset bid by Catawba and won in five sets at Goodman Gym on Tuesday. The Bears (9-4, 8-1) won 21-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20 and 15-13.
Former North Iredell star Brooke Redmond led the charge for the Bears with 20 kills and 17 digs.
Rachel Gallup had 13 kills and six blocks for the Indians.

Local golf
The 5th annual Debbie Barrier Plummer Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Corbin Hills on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Lunch begins at noon. Shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.

The Rowan County United Way will sponsor its first golf tournament as part of its fall fund-raising campaign.
The two-day event, The Fall Back, will be held at Corbin Hills Golf Course on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1.

7th-grade football
Knox won 38-6 against Erwin on Tuesday. The Trojan defense played another stellar game, giving up 6 points late.
Key performers for the Trojans (4-1) were Sincere Houston, Zeek Biggers, Jackson Murphy, Varney Farhnbullah, Cequane Lawing and Kendall Mitchell. Noah Hampton had big tackles and added an interception.
The offensive line, consisting of Biggers, Trey Kyles, Chauncey Morris, Dillion Rowh and Josh Hill, did a great job protecting QB Vance Honeycutt, and opening holes.
Issiah Clay had 122 yards on five carries, and 3 TDs, plus a 2-point conversion. Mike Mclean had a 46-yard scamper for a TD.
Honeycutt hit Joe Witherspoon for a 60-yard passing TD.
