Rowan County shows its love for Legion baseball

Over this past week, eight of the best American Legion baseball teams from across the state found out a few things about Salisbury and Rowan County. We take pride in our community, our hospitality, and our baseball. This year’s NC American Legion Baseball State Tournament was a tremendous success and an amazing experience for the young men who are fortunate enough to wear a Rowan County uniform and play at Newman Park.  This is an attempt to thank those that made this event possible.

Many thanks to Novant Health, Wallace & Graham, F&M Bank, Salisbury-Rowan County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Gaither M. Keener Jr., Catawba College, Salisbury Police Department, Rowan County Sheriff’s Department, Rowan County Rescue Squad, Salisbury Fire Department, Cart Works Inc, East Rowan Diamond Sports, Midway Yamaha-Suzuki, Miller Davis Agency, Cheerwine, Tony Shaw and BB&T , the Rowan County Honor Guard, and the members of the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce for your generous support.

To all the community volunteers: You made this a memorable experience for all involved. Thank you for your commitment to our program and this event.

Thanks to the Salisbury Post. You made our event special to the players, coaches, families, and fans. The coverage was spectacular.

To the dedicated men and women of the American Legion that make up Rowan County American Legion Baseball: Thank you for your service to our team, our fans, and our country.

And finally, thanks to the fans. You fill Newman Park every summer and make it mean something to take the field for Rowan County. It was no different this season and there is more baseball to be played.

See you in Asheboro.

Sidewalk sightings

Salisbury and Rowan County have been my chosen home for at least 36 years. Recently I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the construction of fragments of sidewalks along our busy Jake Alexander Boulevard.

Sightings like this bring me great pleasure and humanize our spaces that often have dangerous foot and bike traffic. Join me in celebrating more sightings that achieve a kinder environment — crosswalks, bike lanes, greenways?

Foxx not stopping GMOs

This is to notify everyone in District 5 that Rep. Virginia Foxx recently voted for the bill to block states and the FDA from labeling genetically engineered food, as well as to allow food labeled “natural” to continue to contain GMOs. Apparently she thinks it’s OK that we are kept in the dark. And it seems that corporate profits have more importance to Representative Foxx than citizens having a choice to know what is in our food.

How can a building help?

Like all the taxpaying citizens of this county, I have been following with interest this new building fiasco of the Board of Education. First it was to go here, then, there, and finally, after years of this ditzing around, they got their wish of having it downtown, right in the middle of shops and restaurants.

Naturally, it’s over budget and adjustments have had to be made. Looks to me like they don’t have very much more space than what they are now occupying, and the dome — oh, the dome. Isn’t it wonderful that they have the dome, at a cost of over $300,000? What a plus for us!

Under the guise of doing it “for the children,” we have a nice dome on the building. I’m sure the teachers and students who are still  occupying schools in the county that have a crumbling infrastructure and leaking roof can point to that dome with pride.

Best of all, I look for those test scores to jump right up there, right?
