Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly runner-up in Carolinas Junior

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) finished tied for second in the CGA Carolinas Junior that concluded at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro on Thursday.
Lyerly shot 72-69-70 — 211 to finish 5-under. He finished three shots back of Henry Shimp of Charlotte.
Stephen Carroll (Concord) shot 75-70-70 — 215.
Logan Shuping (East Rowan) shot 77-74 — 151 but didn’t make the cut.
EGolf Tour
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 1-under for two rounds but didn’t make the cut in the Verdict Ridge Open in Denver.
Elon
Elon’s men’s golf team, which includes Troy Beaver (Salisbury) was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America for excellence in academics during the 2014-15 school year.

Showcase baseball
Ike Freeman (East Rowan) has been a standout for the South Charlotte Panthers 2016 club and helped the Panthers win the Championship of the Capital City Classic in July.
The UNC commit is batting .387 (41-for-106) with 10 doubles, a homer, 30 RBIs and 29 runs scored.
Owen White
Owen White (Carson) is playing shortstop and pitcher for the South Charlotte Panthers. The rising sophomore is in the Class of 2018, but heis playing for the Panthers 2017 team that has a 29-7 record.
The Panthers finished runner-up in the BIC Best in East 16U Championship in June.
White is batting .343 (37-for-108) with eight doubles and a triple. He has 18 RBIs and 22 runs scored.
On the mound, White is 3-0 with three saves. He has 24 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.70. White has been clocked at 91 mph this summer.
Austin Love
Austin Love (West Rowan) joined the South Charlotte Panthers 2017 team late in the season.
He’s batting .400 (4-10) with two doubles. He’s 1-0 on the mound with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings. He has an ERA of 1.91.
The Panthers will return to action for the fall portion of their season in September.

College football
The South Atlantic Conference will host a Digital Media Day for media and fans previewing the football season on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
The event will be on the Conference’s website, www.TheSAC.com. The session will begin at 10 a.m. Catawba head coach Curtis Walker will begin the event at 10:05 a.m.

Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators were pounded 10-2 by Greensboro on Thursday.
Louie Lechich had two hits for the Intimidators. Michael Suiter scored two runs.
Zach Thompson (3-5) took the loss. He was knocked out during Greensboro’s seven-run third inning.
Jorgan Cavaerio (3-4) pitched seven innings and held the Intimidators (52-50, 17-16 second half) to four hits and one run.
Brooks update
Craig Brooks (Catawba) was credited with his first pro win late Wednesday when the Eugene Emeralds defeated the Spokane Indians 4-3.
Brooks allowed a game-tying, two-run double in the sixth, but he wound up the winner when Eugene retook the lead in the seventh inning.
Brooks (1-0) struck out two in an eventful inning.
