Area Sports Briefs: Dixon All-America scholar

UNC Greensboro golfer Roy Dixon (Salisbury) has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
This marks the second straight year Dixon has earned All-America Scholar honors from the GCAA.
Dixon owns a 3.97 GPA in finance and graduated earlier in May as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He will continue his studies in the fall at the University of North Carolina Law School.
He is a four-time All-Academic SoCon selection, a member of the SoCon Honor Roll in every semester of his collegiate career and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors as a junior and a senior.
eGolf Tour
The eGolf Gateway Tour returned to Verdict Ridge Golf & Country Club in Denver on Wednesday for the first round of the Verdict Ridge Open.
Frank Adams III shot 2-under 70 Wednesday and is tied for 34th heading into Thursday’s round.

American Legion
Rowan County plays the West Virginia state champion in the first round of the Southeast Regional in Asheboro next Wednesday.
West Virginia’s state championship tournament is in progress and won’t conclude until Aug. 1.
Rowan County’s game will be at 4:30 p.m. and will be the opener of a two-game evening session. The second game of that session will be host Randolph County against Columbus, Tenn.
The early games in the first round will be South Carolina vs. Florida and Georgia vs. Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The double-elimination tournament will run through Sunday, Aug. 9. The winner moves on to the World Series in Shelby on Aug. 13-18.

Prep football
The first official day of football practice is Saturday, Aug. 1.
Practices are three hours, including stretching and cooling down time.
There’s also the option of a three-hour practice and three-hour cooling down period, followed by a one-hour walk-through without equipment.
The first day of contact drills is Aug. 7.
The first day of scrimmages is Aug. 11.
Opening night for most teams is Aug. 21, although A.L. Brown and Concord will clash in Kannapolis on Aug. 20.

Volleyball
Elena Turnbull (Carson) has been outstanding in beach volleyball this summer and is a top-ranked player nationally for 16-under girls.
Turnbull’s partner is Carrboro’s Katie Carpenter.

Rowan Little League
Rowan Little League is taking sign-ups through Aug. 25 at Godley’s Garden Center for fall baseball and girls softball leagues.

Fall ball is for ages 3 to 12. Cost is $50. Baseball ages are as of April 30, 2016 ,and softball ages are as of December 31, 2015.
Games begin after Labor Day.

East cross country
East Rowan’s girls and boys cross country teams will hold their first practice Saturday, Aug. 1, at 9 a.m. Dan Nicholas Park.
Meet at the front entrance. Bring a current physical if there is not one on file at the school. Mandatory concussion testing for all cross country runners is Monday, Aug. 3, at East Rowan at 9 am. Practice will follow on the track.

Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators play Greensboro at home Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
Kannapolis will play seven straight home games.
• Columbus’ Jerry Sands (Catawba) hasn’t homered in a while, but he’s batting .375 in his last 10 games.

West girls camp
Lady Falcons Basketball Camp will be held from Aug. 3-6 from 4-7 p.m. at West Rowan High.
The camp is for rising 4th-9th graders.
The cost is $40.

South Rowan Youth Football Camp will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 until noon.
The camp is for rising kindergarten-8th grade.
The cost is $25 per child with a $5 discount for siblings.

Salisbury soccer
Salisbury’s summer soccer camp runs through Friday, July 31.
Camp begins each day at 9 a.m. and ends at noon.
The location is at the SHS practice field, behind Wiley Apartments and adjacent to SHS on New Street.
Camp costs $65 and includes a camp T-shirt.
All proceeds go to SHS soccer and Salisbury athletics.
Participants can be from any school. The camp is for for any rising 7th through 12th grade player, boys and girls.
Participants need to bring shin guards and water. (Water will be available on site as well).
A ball is not needed.
