J.C. Price American Legion Post No. 107

As the J.C. Price American Legion Post No. 107 hosts its annual Memorial Week Celebration, its members are also marking the post’s 95th birthday.

The post was established June 2, 1920, on Monroe Street, by comrades Robert Gillespie, Will Carr and Jake Poe. The post moved from Monroe Street to its current location at 1433 Old Wilkesboro Road.

Gillespie, Carr and Poe, along with members, built the post from old discarded bricks from construction sites where they worked. Through the past 95 years, J.C. Price Post No. 107 has been active in the community, state and nation with various programs and has won numerous awards.

At the present time, J.C. Price Post No. 107 is continuing to serve the community by sending three rising seniors to Boys State at Catawba College this summer, sponsoring a tee-ball team and having an annual fundraiser for the only minority orphanage in Oxford, North Carolina.

Current members of the post are volunteers at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center and members of the Rowan County Veteran Honor Guard.

To help celebrate the post’s 95 birthday, the organization is hosting its 87th annual Memorial Day Week Celebration this week, through June 6.
