Area Sports Briefs: Campbell’s Nesbitt honored; Hornet soccer rolls

Campbell senior shortstop Ericka Nesbitt (East Rowan) was named to the second team All-Big South softball team.

Nesbitt led the conference in batting (.438) and hits (78), while ranking eighth in runs (44) and total bases (92), seventh in on-base percentage (.468), and ninth in steals (17).

A first-team all-league performer in 2012 and 2013, Nesbitt missed the last half of the 2014 season with a shoulder injury.

Nesbitt ranks among Campbell’s top-five all-time in batting average (3rd, .408), runs (3rd, 147), hits (3rd, 256) and steals (3rd, 77) and is sixth all-time in assists (387).   

Prep soccer

Second-place Salisbury finished the regular season 15-2-1 (8-1-1 CCC) with a 9-0 home victory against Thomasville Bulldogs.

The Hornets recognized seniors Mary Seifert and Adna Music on Wednesday. The graduating class of 2015 has a combined record of 53-21-3.

Win No. 53 got off to an appropriate start as Ceci Cardelle found Music to get the Hornets on the board.

Seven minutes later,   Seifert scored an unassisted goal.

Also scoring for the Hornets were Julia Honeycutt, Emily Mann, Cardelle and Maria Capito.   Giselle Nieto and Bethanie Stauffer (both freshmen) scored their first career goals.

With just over 14 minutes left in the match, Jazmin Oliva found sophomore Ana Romero with a diagonal ball about 20  yards from the goal. Romero beat a player, took two touches, and buried a side netting,  walk-off goal, the first of her career.

  Providing assists  were Katie Bullock (three), Cardelle, and Capito.

• East Rowan won 3-0 against North Stanly on Wednesday. Alana Miller scored two goals, while Alexis Avalos had one.

Prep wrestling

Carson’s Brandon Sloop,  a state champion and the Dutch Meyer Award winner as Rowan County Wrestler of the Year, will sign with UNC Pembroke on Friday.

Prep baseball

Sixth-seeded Davie County reached the CPC championship game with a 5-3 win against West Forsyth. Brandon Lankford had a homer for the War Eagles.

• North Davidson topped Reagan 7-2 in the other CPC semifinal.

• Fifth-seeded Cox Mill rolled 10-0 against Northwest Cabarrus at Staton Field in the SPC semifinals and will take on No. 6 Hickory Ridge in Thursday’s 7 p.m. championship game.

• Robinson will play Hough at Hopewell for the MECKA championship on Thursday.

Prep softball

Davie’s softball team lost 4-3 to North Davidson in a CPC semifinal on Wednesday.

• Salisbury fell 10-0 to West Davidson in a CCC semifinal on Wednesday.

College softball

Catawba opens regional play with a 4 p.m. game against Anderson on Friday at North Georgia.

College baseball

Catawba is still ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region based on games through Sunday.

Catawba (40-13)  lost  9-4 to Mount Olive on Monday.

The Peach Belt Conference tournament is this weekend.

• Catawba reliever Bryan Blanton has been named Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week.

Blanton  earned a win and a save for Catawba in two appearances against USC Aiken.

College tennis

Catawba tennis coach Jeff Childress, announced the signing of a men’s recruit and a women’s recruit.

The women’s recruit, Erisa Onchi, is ranked in the top 15 in Tokyo.

Luca Picci (Zimbabwe) is the men’s recruit and has been representing the Zimbabwe national team since 2009.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators could not keep West Virginia off the scoreboard late and fell 4-2 to the Power on Wednesday.

Kannapolis starting pitcher Spencer Adams, a second-round pick,   matched his career-high with six innings of work but took the hard-luck loss.

Louie Lechich hit his first homer for Kannapolis (10-15).

The series continues Thursday in West Virginia.

• Jerry Sands (Catawba) homered for Columbus on Tuesday.

• Whit Merrifield (Davie) is batting .308 in 26 games for the Omaha Storm Chasers, Kansas City’s top farm team.

• Paul Kronenfeld (Catawba) has been assigned to Dayton in the Class A Midwest League.  Kronenfeld homered in his second game with Dayton.

•Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) is excelling for Peoria in the Midwest League. In eight relief outings, Lomascolo has fanned 20 in 12 innings. His ERA is 1.42.

• Chris Dula (Catawba) has a win and two saves for the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League.

• Jordan Jankowski (Catawba) is doing well in Triple-A with the Fresno Grizzlies. Jankowski is 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA.

Mid. school golf

Sacred Heart’s golf team finished third in the   CCISAA tournament.

Ben Childress shot 45 and Sean Archer  shot 48. They made all-conference.

Mid. school tennis

Sacred Heart’s boys lost 6-3 to Concordia.

Ben Childress and Sean Archer teamed for a doubles win and they won their singles matches.

• Sacred Heart lost to Salisbury Academy 6-3.

Childress and Archer won in singles and doubles.

• Sacred Heart lost 7-2 to  Forsyth County Day.

Childress and Archer won their singles matches.

• Sacred Heart lost 8-1 to Summit School. Childress won his singles match.

• West Rowan won 6-3 against Southeast.

Singles winners for the Bulldogs were Alex Keadle, Kevin Sullivan, Duane Bowers, T.J. Smith and Cyress Brown.

Winning in doubles for West Rowan was the team of  Drake Martin-Gavin Coffield.

Jerry Cipres won in singles for Southeast.

Cameron Sadler-Zalyn Chalk and Braydon Campola-Gravin Shepard  won doubles matches.

Local golf

Kyle Snider, 11, made his first hole-in-one Saturday   at Corbin Hills.

The Tyro Middle School student used a 4-Hybrid to ace the 100-yard No. 13 hole from the gold tees.

Greg Snider, Reid Carlton and Austin Humphries witnessed the feat.   

  Walker Cup teammates Nathan Smith and Todd White won the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball on Wednesday, beating Sherrill Britt and Greg Earnhardt 7 and 5 in the championship match.

Earnhardt lives in Greensboro and has local ties.

Football clinic

Children ages 6-14 are encouraged to attend the Atlanta Falcons HeadsUp Football Clinic, a free one-day clinic focusing on teaching  proper football tackling technique as well as other football and life skills. This is a non-contact clinic, so there is no equipment needed.

The clinic is at Davie County High on May 16 and will last from 2-5 p.m.

Children and parents must be registered to attend. Space is limited.
