More Area Sports Briefs: All-SPC track announced

Prep track

A.L. Brown’s boys placed second to host Mallard Creek in the MECKA Championships.

A.L. Brown’s A.J. Meadows, Salbador Fuentes, Brandon Hernandez and Kellen Corson won the 4×800 in  8:25.

The Wonders were second in the 4×100 and 4×200.

Finishing second individually were Brylan Weaks in the 100 (11.15 seconds), Corson in the 1600 (4:34), Hernandez in the 3200 (10:37) and Alex Fuller in the discus (130 feet, 11 inches).

A.L. Brown will compete in the 4A West Regional in Boone.

• The All-SPC girls track team was released Saturday.

Jayvee baseball

Salisbury won 7-1 against Lexington at Holt-Moffitt Field.

Salisbury scored early and then rode outstanding pitching by Will Leckonby to victory.

Leckonby had seven strikeouts in five innings. Will Taylor and Joe Steinman pitched an inning each.

Andrean Joyner, Steinman, and Logan Hinson had two hits each.

Local golf

The 34th Annual Edgar Welch Golf Tournament for Rowan County women will be played at 9 a.m. on May 19 and May 21 at Corbin Hills and the Country Club of Salisbury.

The tournament is open to all women with an established handicap at a Rowan club and anyone who has played in the tournament before.

Entry forms are available at local clubs.  The $60  fee includes golf, carts, prizes and the luncheon on May 21.

The format is net best-ball twosome.  Gross prizes also are awarded.

The defending champions are Bev Cobb and Eileen Full.

The tournament is played in memory of Edgar Welch.  Welch’s wife, Elaine, established the tournament in  his memory.

College baseball

Appalachian State split with Arkansas State Saturday.

Brian Bauk (Salisbury) went 2-for-2 in the first game. Noah Holmes (East Rowan) went 3-for-5 in the second game.

College softball

Pfeiffer’s Sydney Poole (East Rowan) pitched well again on Saturday in an 8-1 win against Belmont  Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Tournament in Burlington.

Poole (10-6) pitched a complete game. She struck out three, walked none and allowed seven hits.

Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) struck out seven in five innings of relief for Belmont Abbey, but the Crusaders couldn’t overcome Pfeiffer’s early 6-0 lead.

Jacobs (11-10) pitched six innings Saturday in a 13-3 win against Mount Olive.
