Girls basketball: North Rowan girls win easily

SPENCER — North Rowan’s girls played without 1,000-point scorer Demeria Robinson, Brianna White and Ashlyn Mills, but they had no trouble beating visiting Lexington 60-38 on Friday and sweeping the season series.

“We won with defense,” North Rowan coach Brian Lytton said. “When you’re missing some offense, you have to play even better defense, and that’s what we did.”

Freshman Egypt Alexander had her way inside and scored a career-high 19 points for the Cavaliers. Aliyah Farmer had an efficient 16 points. Special Washington added 10.

Lytton apologized for Alexander only scoring 19. She sat down early with the game well in hand against the Yellow Jackets (6-10, 3-3).

“If I’d known she had scored so many, I would’ve let her stay in to score 20,” Lytton said.

Kahari Sanders was just about the whole show for the Yellow Jackets. She finished with 24 points.

After a competitive first quarter, the Cavaliers (10-5, 5-1) took control by outscoring Lexington 16-5 in the second quarter to take a 30-16 halftime lead. Washington and Fredejah Royer hit 3-pointers in the second quarter for the Cavaliers.

In the middle of third quarter, Alexander had scored the same number of points (19) as Lexington’s team. Alexander and Farmer combined for 15 points in the third quarter as North Rowan blew it open. The Cavaliers closed that quarter with an 11-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Ashley Blaire and five points in a span of 10 seconds by Farmer.

North Rowan led by 30 after Washington hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter, but Sanders kept scoring and made the final score more respectable.

“We played well in stretches,” Lytton said. “If we can get healthy, we can be good.”
