CHINA GROVE — It’s not like Sydney Huffman isn’t a pretty good player, but it was still a bit of a surprise to see her making shots from everywhere Tuesday at West Rowan.

“On fire,” teammate Alex Allen said with a laugh. “That’s all you can say.”

Allen scored her usual quiet 20 for the Cougars, and Huffman’s loud 22, a career best, finished off visiting West Rowan 62-48 in SPC action. Huffman is always good for points in the paint, but on this night she was splashing 3-pointers from the left corner.

“These last few games, Sydney has been focused and ready to go, and when she’s like that she’s a difference-maker,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said. “She and Alex are seniors, their high school games are numbered, and they know their team is fighting for a playoff spot. The way they’re playing, they’ll have no regrets.”

Huffman had 13 at halftime, and Carson also got seven from freshman Taylor Wiggins to take a 32-22 lead to the break. Carson’s defense held the Falcons to two field goals in the second quarter. That enabled the Cougars to build a lead.

“It was great to see us making shots, but it still always starts with defense for us,” Misenheimer said. “West has very explosive players in Khaila (Hall) and Taylor Martin, but we did a pretty good job on them.”

West Rowan (7-12, 5-6) scratched within nine points early in the fourth quarter, but Huffman answered with seven straight, and the Cougars (9-10, 6-5) were on their way.

Hall, a junior, scored 26 for the Falcons, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

West Rowan (48): Hall 26, Miller 9, Yow 4, Martin 3, Vaughters 2, Charles 2, Lovell 2, Cowan.

Carson (62): Huffman 22, Allen 20, Gabriel 7, Wiggins 7, Roberson 4, Shumaker 2, Turney, Ketchie, Furr.
