KANNAPOLIS — Rowan authorities charged a Kannapolis man with inappropriately touching a teenage girl who attended a New Year’s Eve sleepover at his home. Officials said the man also allowed some teens to drink alcohol.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Michael James Earl, 39, of the 100 block of Rutledge Street, with one count of felony indecent liberties with a minor and two counts of misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A report said Earl is accused of “encouraging” a 13-year-old boy to consume an alcoholic beverage as well as a 15-year-old girl. The same girl told authorities she was staying at a friend’s home to ring in the New Year. A group of teens were staying in some sort of building behind the home.

The girl went to bed and woke up around 7 a.m. to someone kissing her. The girl said she thought it was one of the other teenage boys who was at the sleepover, but realized it was Earl. She told authorities he also touched her inappropriately. The incident was reported on Tuesday.

Earl was issued a $2,500 secured bond and has since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center. He is expected in court March 4, records show.
