Lyerly Street rail crossing closed in Granite Quarry

The N.C. Department of Transportation has permanently closed the Lyerly Street railroad crossing in Granite Quarry. As a result of the closing, East Lyerly Street will now end at Railroad Street.

The closure is because of railroad crossing upgrades at East Bank Street, and Norfolk Southern’s desire to minimize at-grade locations where vehicles cross railroad tracks to reduce or eliminate the chance of vehicle-train collisions.

A new traffic pattern is in place. Motorists traveling on East Lyerly Street will turn onto Railroad Street, Depot Street and South Main Street to get back on West Lyerly Street.
