10-year-old victim in Kannapolis murder

Update (2:17 p.m): KANNAPOLIS — Authorities said a 10-year-old was found dead in a Kannapolis home Sunday night and a 39-year-old Kannapolis man is in custody.
Police have not released the name of the boy, but identified the suspect as Eugene William Mays of 2943 S. Ridge Ave.
A 32-year-old Kannapolis woman also was found severely injured inside the South Ridge Avenue home Sunday night.
Authorities were called to the home about 8:45 p.m. for a welfare check on the residents. Police had to force their way into the home.
Inside officers found the boy dead and Christi Melisha Stewart badly wounded, authorities said.
Stewart and Mays are both listed at the same address, but police have refused to disclose the relationship of those involved or any other details about the murder.
Officers said Mays was initially developed as a suspect in the homicide Monday morning. He was picked up at 2827 Forbes Road in Gastonia about 2 a.m., authorities said, by Gaston County Police.
Authorities said Mays was originally charged with an outstanding misdemeanor charge on an unrelated incident. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and additional charges are pending.

KANNAPOLIS — Police are investigating after finding a man dead and a woman severely injured in a home on South Ridge Avenue on Sunday.
The Kannapolis Police Department has not released the victims’ names.
Officers went to the home in the 2900 block of South Ridge around 8:45 p.m. Sunday after someone asked the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office to check on the person who lived there.
The officers forced their way in to the home and found a man dead and a woman with severe injuries, the department said in a news release. The woman was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast.
The department’s felony investigation unit is collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Authorities didn’t specify how the man died or the woman was injured but characterized the crimes in a news release as “homicide” and “assault with a deadly weapon.”
No other information was released today.
